Columbus boys’ soccer wins GMAC title. Plus Pines Charter and St. Thomas soccer and more
The Columbus boys’ soccer team defeated visiting Coral Gables 3-0 to win the GMAC Tournament.
Senior Lucas Levine scored twice and junior Christian Pico once. Sophomore Chris Ortiz added an assist.
Senior goalkeeper Alejandro Garcia recorded his fifth shutout with solid defensive support from senior Chris Guadagno, senior Bryan Izquierdo, junior Matthew Pico, and Levine.
The champs, guided by first-year coach Kameron Clark, also feature senior Alex Castro, junior George (Alex) Ferenczi, senior Lexander Garcia, senior Dom Inglesias, senior Trey Jones, junior Jacob Marino, senior Kirk Menendez, junior Evan Ormazabal, junior Martin Peralta, junior Alexandro Puerta, junior Trent Rosenblatt, junior Jorge Samudio, junior David Thomas, junior Eric Torres, sophomore Javier Voigt, sophomore Gabriel Leon, sophomore Bosco Miranda.
The assistant coaches are Andres Ruiz and Eduardo Diaz, and the goalkeeper coach is Bryan Alvarez.
Columbus (9-1-4) defeated Reagan 3-0 and ATM 2-0 to advance to the GMAC championship match.
Runner-up Coral Gables (11-2), coached by Michael Fotso, beat Edison and TERRA to reach the finals. Last season the Cavaliers placed second to Reagan in the GMAC finals.
Columbus edged Coral Gables 4-3 earlier in the season. The Explorers also defeated MAST, Miami High, Goleman, SLAM and Hialeah Gardens. They tied Miami Country Day, Miami Beach, Ransom Everglades and Palmetto. Dr. Krop handed them their lone loss.
St. Thomas Aquinas soccer
Led by Player of the Game Ann Brady, the St. Thomas Aquinas girls’ soccer team defeated visiting Stoneman Douglas 3-0.
Sophomore Genesis Hernandez scored twice, and junior Gabrielle Stewart added one goal for the Raiders (14-1-1). Brady, a junior who played 80 minutes, had an assist.
Senior goalkeepers Gracey Messingschlager (three saves) and Alexandra Carpintero (two saves) combined on the shutout.
Pembroke Pines Charter soccer
Pembroke Pines Charter then capped off an undefeated regular season by edging visiting St. Thomas Aquinas 1-0.
Leyla Molina scored the winner with five minutes remaining off an assist by Sabrina Araujo.
Goalkeeper Madison Casanova made a game-saving save en route to her 12th shutout.
This season the Jaguars (11-0-4) allowed just two goals, totaling 14 shutouts in 15 games. Pompano Beach was the only team to score, recording two goals in a tie.
