Cardinal Gibbons utilized around 20 wrestlers during the competition, showcasing its depth, including Peyton Vargas at 113, Jonathan Hudson at 120, returning state champ Nicholas Yancey at 126, returning state placer Palermo at 132, Diego Peralta at 145, Limperis at 152, returning state placer Danil Korochenskiy at 160.

The Chiefs, under the direction of former Cardinal Gibbons standout wrestlers Jamal and Jamel Morris, improved to 17-0. Twins, Jamal was a three-time state champ and four-time state finalist for Coach Frank Pettineo. Jamel was a four-time state placer and one-time state champ.

Gibbons will compete with Clewiston, Jensen Beach and Somerset at regional duals. Only the region champ advances to state duals.

Prior to district duals, the Wolverines (13-5) recorded victories over American Heritage-Plantation, Clewiston, St. Thomas Aquinas, Westminster Christian and SLAM, which is where new Belen Jesuit Coach Francis Aguilar started a wrestling program.

Belen Jesuit usually boasts a couple of good wrestlers each season, but the new coaching staff is looking to make it a powerhouse. They are led by Aguilar and assistant coaches Luis Gonzalez (former coach at Miami High) and Joel Duran (former coach at Miami Springs) and Matthew Barrera (former state placer for Miami Springs). Aguilar, Duran and Barrera wrestled for Miami Springs, while Gonzalez was coaching at rival Miami High.

Overall, Miami Dade County has perennial power South Dade, Southwest, Columbus, and Mater Lakes Academy topping the list.

Also in the District 16-2A duals, Miami Southridge edged Miami Northwestern 36-34 for third place.

Belen Jeusit and North Miami advance to regional duals with an opportunity at state.
