Gulliver Prep girls’ soccer wins. Plus more soccer and Miami Classic basketball results

Ariana Hernando started the new year on the right foot using the left with two goals and one assist to lead the Gulliver Prep girls’ soccer team over LaSalle 3-1.

Christine Lezama, who had two assists, and Catalina Garcia, who added a goal, controlled the midfield. Olaia Rackauskas and Camila Sandaal anchored the defense along with goalkeeper Julia Estrada, who made seven saves for the Raiders (6-7-2). Hanah Gonzalez scored for LaSalle (7-4-1).

On the boys’ side, Cardinal Gibbons continues to impress with a 2-0 victory over Pine Crest.

Jason Trujillo and Dylan Garcia each scored for Coach David Montiel. Riley Holden and Greg Priyen had assists. The Chiefs are 11-1-2.

St. Thomas Aquinas boys with standout coach John Walsh is having another good season. Same can be said for Coach Carlos Giron’s girls’ team at St. Thomas Aquinas.

University School’s boys are doing well, and LaSalle boys and girls are wracking up the wins.

Miami Classic Hoops

BOYS: Miami Classic: Columbus 74, Dillard 68: In the opener of the Miami Classic at Florida Christian School, the Explorers (13-1) defeated Dillard.

Columbus took an 11-point lead into halftime, but Dillard (5-7) responded in the third quarter with five 3-pointers to equal their first half output (26 points) in the quarter. The fourth quarter began with Columbus ahead by a point. A see-saw battle ensured.

The Explorers showed poise and determination down the stretch, highlighted by a crowd-pleasing alley oop from Cayden Boozer to Malik Abdullahi, which put Columbus up by six with 2:18 remaining. The Explorers then held on for the big win.

Cameron Boozer led Columbus with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Garyn Bess had 16 points, and Cayden Boozer 14. Freshman Dwayne Wimbley paced Dillard with 23 points, including five 3-pointers, including four in the second half to keep the Panthers in the game.

BOYS: Miami Classic: Columbus 69, Mater Lakes Academy 54: The Explorers (14-1) won another at Miami Classic.

Columbus had a narrow seven-point advantage going into halftime and then exploded with a 24-point third quarter to extend the lead to 13 to start the fourth quarter. The Explorers showed more reliance on its bench against Mater Lakes (11-5), going nine deep as Cameron Boozer picked up 3 fouls and sat half of the second and third quarters.

Columbus got quality minutes from senior point guard Jalen Velasquez, who had six points and seven rebounds. Player of the Game Cayden Boozer had 25 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Cameron Boozer, limited by foul trouble, still grabbed 16 boards and added 14 points.

Sophomore center Malik Abdullahi pulled down nine rebounds. Christian Reid and Anthony Knowles led Mater Lakes with 22 and 18 points, respectively, most of it on very physical offensive play inside the lane.
