Columbus basketball

The Columbus boys’ basketball team went 2-1 to place fifth of 12 top teams at the prestigious John Wall Christmas Invitational Basketball Tournament in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The John Wall Invitational pitted some of the most elite teams in the nation against one another in preparation for their respective state runs in the second half of the prep basketball season.

In the opening game of the three-day tournament, Columbus, ranked No.3 in Florida, lost to Moravian, the top ranked team in North Carolina, 62-43.

The Explorers led by six after one quarter, but Moravian took over in the second quarter. The Lions hit seven of nine 3-pointers to take the lead and never looked back.

Columbus rebounded with a 68-65 victory over Winston Salem Christian, ranked ninth in North Carolina.

Cameron Boozer led the Explorers with 24 points, including 10 points in the decisive fourth quarter. Twin Cayden Boozer and Garyn Bess contributed 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Columbus then edged Julius L. Chambers (Charlotte, North Carolina) 60-58.

This game was characterized by an all-Boozer buzzer beater, numerous lead changes and stellar play by Columbus sixth man Kevin Noriega.

Noriega made a 3-pointer and two foul shots down the stretch during an exciting fourth quarter and exhibited lock down fourth quarter defense on Chamber’s standout guard Jaylen Curry, who entered the fourth quarter with 21 points and 7 assists. Noriega held Curry scoreless in the quarter.

With the score tied at 58. Columbus came out of a Coach Moran time out with 18 seconds left in regulation. At 10 seconds, Cayden Boozer attacked the basket. His shot attempt bounced just off the rim, but brother Cameron exploded in the paint to the glass, following Cayden’s shot. In one motion, he rebounded the ball and scored at the buzzer to give Columbus the win to secure fifth place.
