Golf honors for state champ American Heritage Plantation. Plus basketball and soccer results
Luke Clanton, a senior from Plantation-American Heritage and the 2020 Mr. Golf, was the 2021 Florida Dairy Farmers Class 2A Boys’ Golfer of the Year.
In 2021, Clanton won a state title for the third time.
Senior Parker Bell of Chiles High School was named Class 3A Boys’ Golfer of the Year and the 2021 Mr. Golf. He won the Class 3A boys’ state championship with a 36-hole score of 5-under par 137 (68-69).
American Heritage coaches Brandt Moser and Mike Carlin were the Class 2A boys and girls coaches of the year, respectively. The Patriots swept the 2A state championships.
Senior Izzy Pellot, a Class 3A state champ from Lake Mary High School was named Miss Golf. Coach Mickey Leaply of Class 3A state champ Ponte Vedra and Coach Dennis Burchill of Class 3A state champ Lake Mary were announced the overall boys’ and girls’ Golf Coaches of the Year, respectively.
The Florida Dairy Farmers High School Sports Awards program exemplifies Florida Dairy Farmers’ commitment to the state’s youth.
This marks the 30th year of these unique awards as it honors the state’s top athletes and coaches in all 30 FHSAA sanctioned and recognized sports.
The program also emphasizes to young people the importance of keeping dairy products a primary part of their diet in their overall nutrition plan.
Basketball
For their first seven games, the Columbus boys’ basketball team put those games out of reach by the time the fourth quarter commenced.
Last week’s contest against a private school from Suffolk County, New York, was different.
The Explorers needed double overtime to beat (Suffolk County, New York) UpperRoom Christian 76-74.
Columbus took a 2-point lead into the locker room at halftime. Then they took charge of the game in the first four minutes of the third quarter, building a double-digit lead.
That lead dissipated with the Lions’ Joe-an Arangi scoring 12 of his 29 points and 6-foot-11 Yousouf Singare grabbing six rebounds in that quarter, while controlling the lane defensively.
The fourth quarter became a see-saw battle as the teams exchanged leads several times.
With eight seconds on the clock and Columbus trailing by three, standout Cameron Boozer was double teamed, but he found teammate Garyn Bess spotted up at the top of the key. Bess’s shot hit nothing but the bottom of the net to send the game to overtime.
The first overtime ended tied at 66. In the second overtime, Columbus outscored UpperRoom 10-8 for the close win.
