Soccer

Michael Abril scored the winner as the St. Thomas Aquinas boys’ soccer team edged previously unbeaten Belen Jesuit 2-1.

Diego Lara also scored for the host Raiders, assisted by Daniel Mercado and JJ Rodriguez.

St. Thomas Aquinas improved to 5-2. The Wolverines are 7-1.

Soccer spotlight

Coach Jeff Watson loves the game of soccer.

He has given much time and energy to the sport, helping not only the many soccer players he’s coached at Miami Country Day School in Miami Shores but also many more, recognizing their efforts for awards and honors, too.

Watson has coached high school soccer for nearly 40 years. Quite the accomplishment.

During that time, this FACA Hall of Famer has coached a state championship team and has totaled more than 500 wins, but his “greatest privilege” was coaching his two sons, Quinton and Keeler. Both made Miami Herald All-Dade first team and FACA All-State first team.

Watson added: “Now as I am coming close to the end of my coaching career, I have the privilege of having my two sons as assistant coaches with me at Miami Country Day School. Both have full time jobs, but since we practice everyday from 6:15-8:30 [p.m.], they both can help me coach my high school soccer team.”

The Spartans are 2-1-1 this young season and looking forward to another successful term with Watson (and now his sons) at the helm.

Basketball

The Columbus boys’ basketball team continued its preseason dominance with a 70-47 win over St. Thomas Aquinas in the Sunshine State Preseason Showcase at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale.

The Explorers were coming off a 37-point victory over (Riviera Beach) Suncoast in the tournament opener.

Freshman Cameron Boozer led all scorers with 24 points against St. Thomas Aquinas, and twin brother Cayden added 17. They were the only Explorers in double figures.

Col: Boozer, Cay. 17; Bess, G. 7; Boozer, Cam. 24; Noriega, K. 7; Fragela, B 9; Abdullahi, M. 6. STA: Akuchie, A. 14; Cadogen, M. 10; Myrtidis, M. 9; Buxbaum, T 9; Andreopoilas, M. 2; Benton, T. 2; Smith, Sam 1.

Basketball Tournament

The 44th annual Highlands Christian Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament is December 2-4 at 501 NE 48th St. in Pompano Beach.

A tournament running that many years is quite the accomplishment.

This is a winner advance format with a losers bracket. All teams play three games, establishing first through eighth place.

Games are at 4, 5:30, 7, and 8:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and at 3, 4:30, 6, and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The 44th version, partially sponsored by Under Armour and BSN Sports, features a solid field, including West Palm Beach-Berean Christian, Cardinal Gibbons, Highlands Christian, Jupiter Christian, Pine Crest, Boca Raton-Saint John Paul II, Boca Raton-St Andrew’s, St. Thomas Aquinas.

Basketball Kreul

The Kreul Showcase, part of the Kreul National High School Basketball Tournament, is Dec. 3-4 at Monarch High School, 5050 Wiles Rd., Coconut Creek.

The Kreul tournament -- with top sponsors Eastbay/Champs, BCAA, Gatorade -- is Dec. 17-22 in Coral Springs, featuring 34 boys’ teams, including 12 teams (many ranked nationally) from out of state. Additionally there will be four top girls’ teams.

This marks the 33rd year for The Kruel, named after longtime local basketball supporter, basketball parent and men’s league player the late Jim Kreul. Three of his kids played basketball for Taravella High School in Coral Springs.

The tournament formed to help the family of Jim Kreul, who died playing men’s league basketball. It has grown into one of the longest running national high school tournaments, generating 110 full tuition scholarships to Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

Teams competing at the showcase Dec. 3-4 are American Heritage-Plantation, Blanche Ely, Boyd Anderson, Coral Glades, Coral Springs, Deerfield Beach, Dillard, (Palm Beach Gardens) Dwyer, Lake Worth, (Stuart) Martin County, Monarch, Norland, Pembroke Pines Charter, Riviera Prep, Stranahan, (West Palm Beach) King’s Academy, Wellington, Westminster Academy.
