Columbus golf third at state. Plus basketball, lacrosse, soccer, volleyball and more golf

The Columbus boys’ golf team placed third at the FHSAA 3A State Golf Championships at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills.

For the Explorers, Sebastian Kawas was 16th at 151, and Hans Risvaer was 19th at 152. Andres Atrio was 36th at 157, and Christian Figueredo was 40th at 159. Max Fonseca was 52nd at 161. They are juniors.

More golf

Standout freshman golfer Lorenzo Rodriguez did not compete for Belen Jesuit during the FHSAA Class 2A State Championships.

Rodriguez opted to play in the second annual Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championship. He tied for 22nd overall, shooting 75-75-71--221. That tied him for second among the class of 2025.

More than 5,000 players nationwide tried to qualify for the Notah Begay III JGNC. They played an 18-hole local qualifier and then a 36-hole regional qualifier.

Rodriguez made it through, one of 150 qualifiers who competed in the Begay tourney Nov. 13-15 at Koasati Pines at Coushatta in Kinder, Louisiana. Golf Channel will broadcast the event Dec. 8.

The FHSAA Class 2A State Championships were Nov. 12-13 at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills. Belen Jesuit finished seventh of 16 teams.

Volleyball

Calvary Christian’s best season in volleyball ended in the finals of the FHSAA Class 4A State Championships at the Suncoast Credit Union Arena in Fort Myers.

Santa Fe (Alachua) defeated Calvary Christian 25-16, 25-17, 25-14 for the title.

Calvary volleyball went 26-5 this season with its first region championship. Sante Fe was 29-3.

Lacrosse

Palmer Trinity School announced the addition of Jason Conner as head coach of the varsity boys’ lacrosse program. He was head coach of men’s lacrosse at ASA College in Miami from 2019-21.

“We are very excited about the upcoming lacrosse season under Coach Conner,” David Lanham, Palmer Trinity director of athletics, said in a release.

“He is a terrific addition to our athletic department and will add depth to our lacrosse program with his extensive experience as both a player and coach.”

Conner has coached at the high school and collegiate levels. He served as an assistant coach at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton Community High School, before becoming a graduate assistant for the men’s lacrosse team at Keiser University.

Conner played on NCAA lacrosse teams for Virginia Wesleyan University in Virginia Beach and Lynn University in Boca Raton, and on the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association for Florida Atlantic University, where he earned a degree in business administration and management.

The varsity boys’ lacrosse season begins Jan. 24, 2022.

Soccer

In an early season battle of the Raiders, Gulliver Prep edged St. Thomas Aquinas 3-2 in boys’ soccer.

Mateo Acosta-Rubio, Tomas Sciarra and Alex Meza each scored for Gulliver (2-0), and German Cueva added an assist.
