Gulliver Prep girls’ swim team wins sixth state title. Plus basketball and soccer results

The Gulliver Prep girls’ swim team won the FHSAA 2A State Swimming Championship at Sailfish Splash Waterpark and Aquatics Center in Stuart.

This marks the Raiders’ sixth state team title in girls’ swimming. Gulliver won five consecutive titles from 2014 to 2018, placed third in 2019 and was runner-up in 2020.

The Gulliver 200 medley relay team (Giovanna Musiello, Reese Rosenthal, Elyse Wood, Cassandra Kraft) won a state title, too.

Each swimmer on Gulliver Prep’s state championship girls’ team scored at least one point. The team is very young with one senior, six freshmen and three juniors.

Gio Musiello (’25) finished 3rd in 200 IM and 3rd in 100 backstroke. Aria Torretta (’23) was 4th in 200 IM and 8th in 100 breaststroke, Cassie Kraft (’23) placed 4th in 50 freestyle and 8th in 100 freestyle. Elyse Wood (’25) finished 5th in 100 butterfly and swam in three relays (200 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay, 400 Free Relay) which placed first, second, third, respectively. Reese Rosenthal (’25) was 6th in 100 breaststroke and 16th in 100 butterfly.

The girls’ 200 free relay (Reese Rosenthal, Elyse Wood, Cassie Kraft, and Aria Torretta) was runner-up. The girls’ 400 free relay (Gio Musiello, Camila Saporta, Elyse Wood, and Aria Torretta) was third.

Also, Camila Saporta (’23) 14th in 200 free and 10th in 500 free; Pietra Wagner (’23) 14th in 200 IM and 12th in 100 breaststroke; Margaret Miao (’22) 16th in 100 breaststroke; Paige Eskra (’25) 16th in 200 free and 11th in 500 free; Sofi Moreno (’25) 16th in 500 free.

The state champion Raiders, under the direction of Coach Chris George, completed the regular season with a 7-2 dual meet record. They won the district championship and regional championship as well. The assistant coaches are Danielle De Angulo and Joey Pedraza.

This is the school’s 61st state championship.

Michelle Fernandez of Mater Lakes Academy won a state title in the girls’ 100 breaststroke in 1:03.60. Reese Andres of Pompano Beach was third in 1:05.79.

Mater Lakes Academy was third of 20 teams in the boys’ state meet and Pompano Beach sixth.

The Mater Lakes Academy boys’ 400 freestyle relay team (Ronny Rueda, Anthony Martinez, Agustin Rodriguez, Matthew Tarafa) won a state title in 3:10.73.

Luca Lesentier of MAST Academy won a state title in the boys’ 100 backstroke at 50.94. Aldo Zepeda of (Pembroke Pines) Somerset was the runner-up in 52.48.

Highlands basketball tournament

The 44th annual Highlands Christian Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament is December 2-4.

A tournament running that many years is quite an accomplishment.

The 44th version, partially sponsored by Under Armour and BSN Sports, features a solid field, including West Palm Beach-Berean Christian, Cardinal Gibbons, host Highlands Christian, Jupiter Christian, Pine Crest, Boca Raton-Pope John Paul II, Boca Raton-St Andrew’s, St. Thomas Aquinas.

This is a winner advance format with a losers bracket. All teams play three games, establishing first through eighth place.

Games are at 4, 5:30, 7, and 8:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and at 3, 4:30, 6, and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The school is at 501 NE 48th St. in Pompano Beach.

Junior Orange Bowl basketball

The Junior Orange Bowl Basketball Classic for boys’ and girls’ teams is December 28-30 at Westminster Christian School, 6855 SW 152nd St, Palmetto Bay.
