Doral Academy, St. Brendan win volleyball district titles. Ransom sweeps swimming titles
The Doral Academy girls’ volleyball team won a 7A district championship by beating Hialeah Gardens 25-22, 25-16, 25-18.
It marks Doral’s first district title since 2015. Hialeah Gardens as the district runner-up also advances to the regional round.
Leading the champion Firebirds were Izabella Molina (17 kills, 3 blocks), Ariel Simmons (10 kills, 2 blocks), Melissa Gonzalez (17 assists, 3 digs, 3 aces), and Luci Macli (23 assists, 3 digs, 2 aces).
In the district semifinal, Doral beat Coral Gables 25-4, 25-11, 25-27, 25-10.
Melissa Gonzalez (17 assists, 12 aces, 3 digs), Izabella Molina (16 kills, 2 blocks), Ariel Simmons (9 kills, 3 blocks) and Alejandra Hernandez (9 kills, 3 digs, 2 aces) were the top performers.
The champs are Alexa Novo, Sofia Picard, Sophia Torres, Haily Nader, Izabella Molina, Sarah Diaz, Bianka Hanks, Olivia Casse, Isabella Valls, Ariel Simmons, Kaily Figueredo, Luci Macli, Angie Vazquez, Vicky Escuer, Melissa Gonzalez, Alejandra Hernandez. In the 7A region quarterfinals on Wednesday, it’s Doral (18-8) vs. Coral Reef (17-7), and Hialeah Gardens (16-3) vs. Cooper City (14-8).

2A District Championship: Archbishop Carroll d. True North Classical Academy 25-16, 25-14, 25-11: Archbishop Carroll (14-9) advances to a 2A regional QF on Tuesday against (Lake Worth) Trinity Christian (16-9). The Titans (17-5) also advance and will play Lake Worth Christian (23-4).

Ransom Everglades swept the team titles in boys and girls’ swimming in a 1A district tournament. Cutler Bay was runner-up in the girls’ competition and third in boys. Carrollton was second in the boys’ division.

Cross Country
The Belen Jesuit boys’ cross-country team continued its winning ways at the FSU Prestate Invitational at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee.
The win marks the fourth Elite Boys Championship Division victory for the Wolverines this season.
Leading the charge for Belen was sophomore Joshua Ruiz, who completed the 5K course in 15 minutes 34 seconds, good for eighth overall.
Belen senior Julian Rodriguez, who ran a season best 16:18, placed 36th. Sophomore teammate Evan Torres was 40th in 16:21.2. Junior Alec Torricella was 50th in 16:29.5, and freshman Jose Diaz-Quintero was 53rd in 16:31.7.
Belen scored 157 points to earn the Elite Team Division title over second place Jacksonville Bolles.
The Elite Team category is the premier race of the day with 30 selected school teams and 275 runners.
Columbus was eighth. Explorers sophomore Alejandro Romagosa was 39th in 16:20.7.
The FSU Prestate Invitational race is considered the Prestate meet, because it is the last large-scale race, where teams compete across all classifications before the FHSAA State Championships in November in the same location.
In the Boys’ 5K Select race, Belen also placed first, and Braddock was third of 33 teams.
Coral Reef junior Ryan Sarafoglu was fifth of 277 runners in 16:07.02. Braddock senior Gabriel Garcia was ninth in 16:15.5. Belen senior Michael Hernandez was 19th in 16:38.4.
Mater Lakes Academy junior Jeshua Osorio was 23rd in 16:43.6, and Sunset senior Dennis Moreno was 25th in 16:44.2.
Belen junior Matthew Calero was 27th in 16:47.4, and sophomore teammate Lucas Alejandro Garcia was 35th in 17:00.08. Braddock sophomore Michael Gongora was 49th in 17:17.3, and Belen sophomore Joseph Ruiz was 50th in 17:18.
Apalachee Regional Park continues to develop its premier cross-country specific racing venue as it will host the 2021 NCAA National Cross-Country Championships in November.
