ILS sailing from LaSalle dominates its first district regatta of the season. Plus more results

ILS sailing from LaSalle High School dominated its first district sailing regatta of 2021, winning both A and B divisions with just 23 total points at the SAISA (South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association) HS Regatta.

The event was hosted by Pine Crest and St. Thomas Aquinas high schools off Virginia Key Beach Park in Miami.

Shorecrest Prep was second of 17 teams with 45 points, and third place Ransom Everglades had 80 points. Gulliver Prep was fourth with 82 points, and St. Thomas Aquinas seventh with 92 points. Pine Crest was ninth with 101 points.

In large fleet, the ILS A and ILS B boats finished first in half the races.

Most noteworthy was the ILS A division group. They had to restart Race 4, after being called over the line early. They consequently started the race last (one minute after the start) but came back to finish third of 30 boats.

For the first time, ILS raced a JV boat, which placed second of 14 teams. That demonstrates the growth of the program and depth of talent that is being cultivated by ILS.

ILS Varsity Division A was skippered by Justin Callahan with junior Danny Riano and sophomore Jadin Gonzalez alternating as crew. Division B was skippered by Mitchell Callahan with senior Brianna Ross as crew.

ILS Driving JV Division A was sophomore Umi Noritake with Caroline Caudron as crew. Driving JV Division B was freshman Keith Grupenhoff with Holland Ramos as skipper.

The South Atlantic District South Division of the SAISA encompasses Florida, excluding the Florida Panhandle and the Caribbean.

ILS will compete in its second district regatta on Oct. 23 in Jensen Beach.
