Belen wins race, star runner commits to Florida. Three more teams remain unbeaten in football

The Belen Jesuit boys’ cross-country team won the 22nd annual Flrunners.com Invitational at Holloway Park in Lakeland.

The win marks the 10th time Belen won the Flrunners.com Invitational. The event featured 1,335 runners (boys and girls), making it the largest cross-country meet in Florida and one of the most competitive in the Southeastern United States.

“These guys have a challenging goal to extend the school’s state championship winning streak to a rare five in a row,” Belen coach Frankie Ruiz said. “As we enter the back half of the season, their training and performances have so far been steadily building toward that achievement in a very consistent and determined manner. We are constantly reminding the guys to do what they can to stay healthy and take no detail for granted from here on in. Nothing will be given to them; together they need to earn it every step of the way.”

At the Flrunners.com Invitational, the Wolverines scored 88 points in the Race of the Champions -- a division with 29 selected teams and 255 runners.

Belen was led by senior Adam Magoulas, who finished first in the 5K race (3.1 miles in a course record 15 minutes 30 seconds). He also maintained his undefeated status for the 2021 season.

Teammate Joshua Ruiz, a sophomore, placed fifth in 15:44. Sophomore Evan Torres was 22nd in 16:17.11, and freshman Joey Diaz-Quintero was 41st in 16:37.52. Diego de la Hoz, a junior, was 46th in 16:42.58.

The team’s next major meet is in Tallahassee on Oct. 16 at the FSU Prestate Invitational.

Magoulas commits to Florida

Belen Jesuit star senior cross-country runner Adam Magoulas committed to NCAA Division I University of Florida in Gainesville.

He’s been a scoring member of the Belen 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 state championship teams.

He is a 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 Miami Herald All Dade first team selection.

He is currently ranked No.2 in Florida and is undefeated this season. He had many college offers, including several from D1 schools.

“After having coached Adam for the last 5 years, I am humbly proud that Adam has chosen to join his former teammates at such a prominent running program under the direction of someone as accomplished as Coach Chris Solinsky,” Belen coach Frankie Ruiz said. “Selfishly, I like that he will still be in Florida, so we can possibly see them race together throughout the season, when our high school schedule coincides with the same meet locations as collegiate meets.”

Magoulas will be running alongside former Belen teammates Javier Vento and Aiden Villasuso. That will mark the first time Belen has three graduates on the same collegiate cross-country team.

More boys’ cross country

Senior Gabriel Garcia of Braddock was 25th of 255 runners in the Race of the Champions elite division at the 22nd annual Flrunners.com Invitational at Holloway Park in Lakeland.
