Diaz-Quintero and Belen boys win cross-country title. Fraga and Lourdes girls win, too
The Belen Jesuit boys’ cross-country team won its 10th consecutive Miami Dade County Youth Fair Championships and 21st in school history at Larry and Penny Thompson Park.
Proving the strength of the depth of Belen, the team ran without its Top 3 runners including Adam Magoulas.
The Wolverines still finished with 16 points in a field that included 26 teams and 308 athletes from Miami Dade County.
Columbus was runner-up with 83 points, and G. Holmes Braddock placed third with 102 points.
Belen was led by freshman Joey Diaz-Quintero, who ran the 5K course (3.1 miles) in 16 minutes and 33 seconds to finish first overall. Teammate Diego de la Hoz, a junior, was second in 16:44.
Senior teammate Julian Rodriguez was third at 16:49, and junior Marco de la Hoz was fourth at 16:51. Braddock senior Gabriel Garcia broke up the pack by placing fifth in 16:55.

Lourdes wins girls’ race
Lourdes junior Olivia Fraga won the girls’ race, edging St. Brendan junior Emma Hencock during the Miami Dade County Youth Fair Championships.
Fraga covered the 3.1-mile course in 20:00.37, and Hencock did so in 20:00.64.
The girls’ division featured 258 runners.
Fraga also led the Bobcats to the team title as Lourdes totaled 42 points, 16 points ahead of runner-up Braddock. Gulliver Prep was third of 20 teams with 77 points, and St. Brendan followed closely at 83 points.

Swimming
The American Heritage (Plantation) swim teams (boys and girls) swept the team competition in a tri-meet with American Heritage (Delray Beach) and Archbishop McCarthy.
Eva Pierre-Antoine, Amari M. Porter and Audrey Prado helped lead the winning Patriots’ girls’ team. Syven Walker of Archbishop McCarthy was a double winner in individual events.
Rithvik Marri and Alessandro Pereira were double winners for the winning boys’ team.

More than 360 junior tennis players competed in the Bobby Curtis Junior Doubles Section Championships at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, featuring many high school age level players.
In boys’ 14s, top-seeded Stefan Karatosic (Aventura) and Rafael Ferreira (Boca Raton) topped No.2 seeds Nathan Germino (Valrico) and Jack Satterfield (Tampa) 3-6, 6-3 [10-3] to capture their first Bobby Curtis doubles title.
In girls’ 14s, No.2 seeds Daniela Chica (Miami) and Gabriella Rawles (Bradenton) reached the semifinals.
In mixed 14s, Miami’s Caleb Chow and Daniela Chica won the title, besting Fort Myer’s Berklie Simmering and Tampa’s Jack Satterfield in the finals 5-4 (7-4), 3-5, [7-5].
In boys’ 16s, No.4 seeds Pierce Garbett (Miami/Gulliver Prep) and Benjamin Willwerth (Jupiter) were finalists. Hunter Nussbaum (Tampa) and Nikola Parichkov (Tampa) topped them in a close finals 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), [11-9].
In mixed 16s, No.3 seeds Catherine Goldman (Hollywood) and David Prasievi (Miami) were first, beating Savannah Webster of Bonita Springs and Benjamin Saltman of Winter Haven 5-3, 5-4 (7-5).
More tennis
A USA Tennis Tour Series event is Friday-Sunday at J.D. Redd Park in Homestead.
The tournament — via SpotSports, USA TennisTour, Global Tennis Tour — will allow players to compete who normally don’t have this opportunity.
Divisions are: Women’s Singles and Women’s Doubles WTAOpen, Pre Wildcard Event, Men’s Open and Girls 18-and-under.
