Divine Savior volleyball wins tournament. HEAT, Lourdes, St. Brendan win big cross-country meet

The Divine Savior Academy girls’ volleyball team won the C-M Cares Tournament.

The 16-team C-M Cares tournament was hosted by Chaminade-Madonna in Hollywood and Archbishop McCarthy in Southwest Ranches.

The Sharks went 3-0 in pool play on day one. They won each match in straight sets, advancing to the gold bracket on day two.

In the semifinal match, Divine Savior defeated Archbishop McCarthy 25-20, 25-12. This set up a match-up with Pine Crest for the Championship.

The Sharks dropped the first set 22-25, before bouncing back and taking the final two sets 25-17, 15-11 to earn the title.

Divine Savior seniors Isabella Mendoza, Isabel Macia and Maite Alberdi were selected to the All-Tournament team.

Mendoza was also named tournament MVP.

Seniors Belyssa Cruz, Amanda Torres, Natallia Cappellaro, and Mariana Amor played well, too, for the Sharks.

Divine Savior improved to 9-1.

The Sharks’ next tournament is the outstanding Battle of the Beach Invitational, hosted by Venice High School on Oct 1-2. The tournament features some of the best teams in Florida.

Westminster Christian d. University School 25-9, 25-10, 25-5: Emily Matias 11 kills, 5 aces; Gaby Arroyo 11 kills, 7 digs; Bella Artiles 4 kills, 3 blocks; Lamaya Fuller 5 aces, 9 digs. WC (8-3).

Cross country

The Our Lady of Lourdes Academy girls’ cross-country team won the 39th Spanish River Invitational in Class 3A/4A at South County Regional Park in Boca Raton

The Bobcats scored 58 points to best a field of 29 teams. Braddock was second with 97 points.

Lourdes junior Olivia Fraga took the overall individual title. covering 3.1 miles in 18 minutes and 51.4 seconds. She topped 257 other runners.

Dillard sophomore Christiana Coleman ran 18:52.20 for runner-up honors.

Ashley Fitzgerald, another sophomore, of American Heritage (Plantation) was third at 19:18.80, followed by St. Thomas Aquinas freshman Grace Finneran at 19:29.82.

*In Class 2A, Pine Crest sophomore Brooke Hooper was first of 123 runners at 19:03.82.

Of 13 teams, St. Brendan captured the team title with 67 points, edging Gulliver Prep by one point.

The Sabres were led by runner-up Emma Hencock, a junior, at 19:06.61. Freshman teammate Gabriela Page placed fourth in 19:42.05. Junior Daniela Alvarez and sophomore Kaycie Aquilino made the Top 10, taking ninth and 10th, respectively, at 20:05.50 and 20:11.79. Senior Paola Montejo was 46th at 23:18.71 to clinch the team title.

Gulliver Prep senior Nina Starvaggi was seventh at 20:01.99. Freshman Kathleen Serig was 11th at 20:12.24. Senior Kyra Gardner was 15th at 21:02.96. Freshman Alessandra Di Mise was 18th at 21:14.11. Senior Olivia Torres was 21st at 21:30.48.

Pine Crest was third with 93 points and Cardinal Gibbons fourth at 109.

*In Class 1A, the South Florida HEAT won the team title, and sophomore Andrea Montaner of runner-up Carrollton was the girls’ individual winner at 19:25.00.

BOYS: TERRA d. Coral Park: The Wolves totaled 1,729 pins. Casey Puett nearly bowled a perfect game with a 264. Aidan Jimenez had a high score 171. Sebastian McDermott recorded a 137 and David Ulloa 124.

BOYS: TERRA d. South Miami: Casey Puett bowled 709 overall; Sebastian McDermott 155 game; David Ulloa 154 game.

GIRLS: Ferguson d. Gulliver 7-0: High Game, High Series: Samantha Abreu 171, 498. High Game, High Series Natalia Findeisen 143, 401. Gull: High Game, High Series Hadley Bowen 146, 389.
