Miami High football game canceled due to Covid. Northwestern, Ransom Everglades win and more
With their vaccinated head coach feeling the effects of COVID-19, the Miami High Stingarees football team announced on Wednesday that it has canceled this week’s game against Miami Beach.
Miami High also canceled last week’s game against Edison. After an upcoming open week, the Stings are expected to be joined by coach Paul Volero on Oct. 9, when Miami High is scheduled to play its top rival, Coral Gables.
Volero, 50, has tested positive for COVID twice – in February and again last week. He was vaccinated in March, which he believes is what kept him from getting much sicker this time around.
“I miss the players,” Volero said. “I miss the coaches. We have a team chat on WhatsApp, and they have all been supportive, including the players and their parents.”

Beach Volleyball
In February, Florida’s first high school beach volleyball season, sanctioned by the FHSAA, will begin, and St. Thomas Aquinas and Westminster Christian will be among the schools competing for a state title.
“There are tons of girls playing sand volleyball,” Aquinas coach Lisa Zielinski said. “The interest is there. I think this will take off as a high school sport.”
Zielinski said there’s no immediate need to build sand courts for Aquinas practices and games.
“We’ll just play on the beach,” Zielinski said.
Westminster coach Julie Doan said her girls have been playing beach volleyball as, essentially, a club sport for years, winning an unofficial state title last year.
Doan said she expects Lourdes, Carrollton, Aquinas, Archbishop McCarthy, Calvary Christian and Cardinal Gibbons to be among her team’s biggest competitors in the inaugural beach season.
