St. Thomas volleyball third at Nike tournament. Plus, bowling, golf, swimming results

The St. Thomas Aquinas girls’ volleyball team placed third in the Gold Division of the prestigious Nike Tournament of Champions in Orlando.

The Raiders went 5-2 in the two-day event, beating (Tallahassee) Chiles, (North Carolina) North Raleigh Christian Academy, Tampa Prep, (Orlando) Boone and Windermere Prep. They lost to (Orlando) Timber Creek and (Ocala) Trinity Catholic.

In an exciting battle, St. Thomas Aquinas defeated Tampa Prep 25-21, 19-25, 17-15. Junior Zy’Aire Barr and freshman Zori Brown each had nine kills. Senior Kalin Hubbard recorded five blocks. Senior Liah Perez had 13 assists and three aces, and senior Alyssa McBean totaled nine digs.

The Raiders, coached by Lisa Zielinski, returned to Broward to defeat West Broward in three sets and Archbishop McCarthy in four sets to improve to 9-2.

Golf

Megan Bermejo of Our Lady of Lourdes Academy fired 38 to win a girls’ golf match against Doral Academy and Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart at the Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables.

In the 9-hole outing, Gaby Gomez (Doral), Fernanda Carrion (Carrollton) and Mia Caraballo (Doral) tied for runner-up honors with 39.

Doral Academy won the team competition with 168. Carrollton was second at 169. Lourdes totaled 191.

Bowling

The Columbus boys’ bowling team beat Reagan 7-0. Columbus: High Game Chris Ferrer 221; High Series Alejandro Johnson 576, Chris Ferrer 576. Reagan: High Game Christopher Kang 172, High Series Christopher Kang 423. Col 1-0.

The St. Thomas Aquinas boys’ bowling team defeated Plantation. Bowler of the Game honors went to Hunter Stamm.

The TERRA girls’ and boys’ bowling teams defeated Coral Reef at Bird Bowl in Miami. The TERRA boys were led by Casey Puett with games of 207 and 215. The TERRA girls were led by Ella Perez with a 192 and 180 and Gillian Pons with a 210.
