Ransom Everglades golfer sets record. Plus, football, volleyball and swimming results

In 1950-something, Miami’s Jack Langer was featured in the Miami Herald Sports section.

Now it’s his grandson’s turn.

Jackson Langer, 16, set a school mark for Ransom Everglades golf by firing (5-under par) 30 on a nine-hole course during a team victory last week over Miami Palmetto at the Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables.

“Obviously, it felt pretty good,” said Langer, a sophomore. “I had no idea what the record was and didn’t know I set it, until my coach [Dave Ragan] sent an email about it.”

Langer’s grandfather made some history, too, back in his day.

Jack, a 1954 graduate of Coral Gables High School, was an outstanding baseball player who was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers (as reported by the Miami Herald). He played minor league ball in that established organization. As a fan, he attended with his father the famous game in 1956, where Don Larsen of New York Yankees pitched the only perfect game in World Series history.

Jack, 84, enjoyed playing and watching baseball. Now his enjoyment is watching his grandson play golf. Jack even took Jackson to many youth golf tournaments.

As for the high school season in 2021, Jackson Langer rebounded in a big way from a less than stellar season opening contest.

“I didn’t play my best in the first match of the season,” Langer said. “I felt I played really good, much better [against Palmetto]. I’ve been practicing hard, working toward it, and I feel like my work is paying off.”

Langer also feels the Raiders have a good chance of qualifying for state.

Langer has been part of the varsity golf team since 8th grade. His score in the 2019 regionals helped propel Ransom into its third consecutive state championship tournament and a top 10 finish, the first in school history.

Ransom Everglades boys’ golf coach Dave Ragan noted: “As a freshman [in 2020], he led the team in scoring and guided the team to a district runner-up finish.”

The Raiders narrowly missed a state championship appearance at the 2020 region event.

Langer, who began playing golf at age 5, not only competes for the school’s golf team, but he is part of the Ransom Everglades lacrosse program as well.

His sister, Blake, is athletic, too, a member of the Ransom Everglades JV basketball and volleyball teams.

Sports are part of the family’s DNA, and Jack Langer is interested in pursuing golf at the college level.

“Langer displays the rare combination of power and finesse that few in the high school game have displayed in my 17 years coaching for Ransom Everglades,” Ragan said. “The last was Jake Beber-Frankel [2020 Ransom Everglades grad] who currently plays for Stanford, which is currently ranked No.1 in the country.

“Langer, though slight in stature at 5-foot-9 and 145 pounds, belts drives of 290-plus yards and has a soft touch around the greens, which creates the optimum scoring [for a] golfer at any level.”

Langer is a passionate golfer who likes to have fun. Last season he hit a hole-in-one in a match on a Par 4 barefoot. In lacrosse, he earned MVP honors for the JV team.

His home golf course is the Riviera Country Club in Coral Gables.
