Doral Academy, Hialeah Gardens, South Plantation volleyball; St. Thomas Aquinas football

In Miami-Dade County, the Doral Academy and Hialeah Gardens volleyball teams are off to really good starts in the 2021 season.

Each is undefeated.

The Firebirds (4-0), coached by Julio Arnaiz, beat St. Brendan, Miami Country Day, Archbishop Carroll and Monsignor Pace.

The Gladiators (5-0), coached by Karina Borge, defeated Krop, Sports Leadership & Management, Westland Hialeah, Hialeah-Miami Lakes and Coral Reef.

In Broward, South Plantation is 5-0, too. Coach Tania Lam noted the Paladins have a talented freshmen class.

South Plantation beat Nova, Western, Northeast, Monarch and Pembroke Pines Charter. Top performers include Elena Lam, Tyra Smith, Cyan Long, Leah Lowe, Jessica Rodriguez and Nathaly Taylor.

STA football

The St. Thomas Aquinas football team was supposed to play Plantation on Friday at PAL Field, but because of COVID, the Raiders will instead travel to Tampa Jesuit.

Once notified on Wednesday by Plantation of its Covid issue, it took the Raiders just one hour to land another opponent. Amazing.
