Belen cross-country program wins two invitationals in one day and more local results
The Belen Jesuit High School boys’ cross-country program began its 2021 season Saturday by competing in two major invitationals in two cities on the same day.
The Wolverines won both.
Belen’s top runners competed at the Kowboy Invitational, hosted by Osceola High School in Kissimmee. Wolverines senior Adam Magoulas won the race in 15 minutes 38 seconds, seven seconds better than (Georgia) Mill Creek senior Ethan Nordman.
Magoulas helped Belen finish ahead of runner-up Mill Creek. The field consisted of more than 20 teams, and Belen runners averaged 16:26 and scored 25 points to best Mill Creek (36 points).
Belen and Mill Creek placed 12 of their runners in the Top 15.
Wolverines sophomore Joshua Ruiz was third in 16:23. Sophomore Evan Torres was sixth in 16:40. Junior Marco de la Hoz was seventh in 16:41. Junior Diego de la Hoz was ninth in 16:52, and senior Ricardo Mendez was 11th in 16:57, and senior Frank Aira was 17th in 17:24.
Belen’s next group of top runners competed on Saturday at the Cobra Country Invitational, hosted by Park Vista High School at South County Regional Park in Boca Raton.
Belen placed first of 24 teams with 32 points. Boca Raton was a distant second at 102 points. St. Thomas Aquinas was third at 115, and Pine Crest was fifth at 171. The South Florida HEAT was 10th at 285. Cardinal Gibbons was 13th at 351.
For the Wolverines, juniors Roberto Leon (16:39), Matthew Calero (16:42) and Alec Torricella (16:45) were fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. Freshman Justin Ruiz (17:08) was 10th, and senior Lucas Morales (17:20) was 12th.
Junior Martin Goodwin (16:37) of St. Thomas Aquinas was third, and sophomore Hunter Morgan (17:04) of South Florida HEAT was ninth. Dillard freshman Joshua Gammage (17:24) was 14th, and junior Jack Gabrielle (17:45) of Pine Crest was 20th.
Belen will travel to Ocala on Saturday for the Horse Park Invitational.

Belen Jesuit 35, (Colorado) Greeley West 0: Jancent Wallace (DB/REC) scored twice (75-yard interception return and 45-yard pass play); Stefan Borrero (REC) 2 catches, 29 yards, TD; Anthony Rubio (RB) 3 carries, 34 yards, TD; Khamani Alexander (RB) 3 carries, 14 yards, TD; Gavench Marcelin (DE) 7.5 tackles (4 tackles for loss), 2 QB pressures, 1 fumble recovery; Adison Arnholt (LB) 4.5 tackles (2 tackles for loss); Andy Miyares Jr. (QB) 6-13 passing for 135 yards and 2 TD.
Dr. Krop 14, Miami Jackson 6: The Lightning kicked off the 2021 season with a win. In the first half, Roger Adam III scored the first touchdown of the season. He finished with 56 rushing yards. Junior QB/ATH Corey Williams had 100 yards passing, including a TD pass to senior receiver Bryce White also in the first half.
Leading the defense was senior Julius Weaver with four tackles for loss. Senior DE Schneider Pierre added 2 sacks and a safety. Senior standout Jayden Haynes recorded six tackles (two tackles for loss), and junior DB Neal Webb had five tackles and forced a fumble. Senior DT Kenneth Pottinger sealed the game with consecutive sacks. Krop plays Coral Glades on Friday.
Ferguson 26, Hialeah Gardens 0: Sophomore RB Manny Rodriguez rushed for 175 yds and 3 TD, and junior RB Shawn Carrero finished with 140 yds on 14 carries. Senior QB Aden Seara connected with junior Alex Cid on a 29 yard TD reception. The shutout was led by senior captain Javier Cifuentes, who totaled 16 tackles (8 solo).
