Belen cross country trains in North Carolina. Columbus golf wins American Heritage tournament
The Belen Jesuit boys’ cross-country team prepared for the upcoming season with its annual trip to North Carolina.
Almost annual.
“We didn’t take a trip last year for the first time in 30 years,” Belen cross-country coach Frankie Ruiz said.
Last year, COVID interrupted the routine, but this season Belen is back on track on hills.
This marks the team’s 30th summer trip and 20th to North Carolina.
The team ran in the mountains of North Carolina on a 10-day, high-intensity, training performance routine.
With that start, Belem is preparing to add to its outstanding cross-country legacy this season.
The Wolverines won four consecutive state championships. If they win a fifth this season, they would become the second program in the sport’s history to win five in a row.
Strength in numbers. Belen’s roster is at 45 runners (JV and varsity), with 32 of them making the trek to North Carolina for that pre-season conditioning program.
Belen’s top five runners entering this season are seniors Adam Magoulas and Juli Rodriguez, sophomores Joshua Ruiz and Evan Torres and freshman Joey Diaz-Quintero.
Magoulas was Miami Herald All-Dade first-team last season. He placed eighth at state in Class 3A, and his season-best time was 15 minutes 36 seconds. Rodriguez, Ruiz and Torres each were Miami Herald All-Dade second-team. Coach Ruiz was the Miami Herald All-Dade boys’ cross-country coach of the year.
The road to state for Belen begins Saturday, Aug. 28 at the Kowboy Invite in Kissimmee.
Columbus wins golf tournament
Columbus opened the golf season by winning the 21st annual American Heritage Golf Tournament at Lago Mar Country Club in Plantation.
