Somerset (Pembroke Pines) wrestling continues to excel with AAU national duals title
The Somerset Academy (Pembroke Pines) wrestling team won the AAU Scholastic National Dual Championship in June in Orlando.
In the playoffs, Somerset competed in the Gold bracket, the top bracket. They went 8-0 in pool play to advance to that Gold bracket.
Somerset’s Sean Concepcion (FSU) was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler, after going undefeated at 11-0.
Teammates Luis Acevedo, Matthew Velasco, Chase Gillis (NYU), Daniel Williams, Joshua Oyeneye (Life University) and Ralph Sanchez also were undefeated to receive Gold All American honors.
Somerset seventh grader Tristan Sainz, senior Skyler Caban (Belmont Abbey) and junior Matthew Jimenez each went 10-1 to earn Silver All American honors.
Somerset, under the direction of Coach Joe Blasucci, won the FHSAA state title in March in Class 1A, the school’s second state championship in wrestling. Two months earlier, the Panthers won their first state title at duals.
Somerset was prepared to face some of the best teams in the country at the AAU Scholastic National Dual Championship.
Blasucci said: “We had 40 or 50 fans there, too. The excitement, the kids, the camaraderie. They had a music box, singing ‘Sweet Caroline,’ after they won the championship.”
He added: “I wasn’t sure what to expect. I thought we could win. It was fun. It was great, and I couldn’t be happier for the kids.”
Somerset also won the AAU Scholastic National Dual Championship in 2019 and was runner-up in 2018. AAU did not hold the event in 2020 because of the pandemic.
After the high school season, Somerset competed in NHSCA Nationals in Virginia Beach in April and Spartan Nationals in Jacksonville in May. In August, Somerset will host two tournaments (Aug. 7 and Aug. 28).
