American Heritage and Palmetto softball teams win region titles to reach state semifinals
The Palmetto girls’ softball team won a 7A region championship by defeating Western 11-1.
Winning pitcher Melody Vizcaino (19-2) allowed one run (none earned) on four hits and one walk while striking out three.
She received solid offensive support. The Panthers (24-4) scored three runs in the second, four runs in the third and four more in the fourth.
Alexis Ortega went 2 for 2 with two walks and two RBI. Amanda Diaz was 2 for 2 with two walks, a run and an RBI. Alyssa Sedler was 1 for 1 with a triple, two walks, a stolen base and three runs. Olivia Rapp went 1 for 3 with three RBI.
Ana Mendieta was 1 for 3 with two runs, and Sophia Wylie had two walks, a run and an RBI. Emily Gonzalez went 1 for 2. Abigail Wylie had two walks and two runs, and Dylan Lesman and Olivia Rodriguez each scored.
The Wildcats ended their season at 14-9.
Palmetto plays (Bradenton) Lakewood Ranch (28-2) in an FHSAA 7A State Semifinal on Friday in Clermont.
American Heritage softball
The American Heritage girls’ softball team edged Pompano Beach 2-1 to win a 4A region title.
Winning pitcher Marissa Thompson whirled a complete game, allowing one run on three hits and three walks while striking out eight in seven innings.
In a scoreless battle, the Patriots (15-8) scored twice in the sixth inning. Hailey Diaz scored first, and Brooke Febles scored the second run when Sidney Miller was hit by a pitch.
Pompano Beach cut the deficit in half with a run in the seventh when Gabby Drew scored on a Riley Dion RBI walk, but American Heritage held on.
The Golden Tornadoes season concluded at 16-6.
American Heritage plays (Brooksville) Hernando (25-4) in a FHSAA 4A State Semifinal on Thursday in Clermont.
Boys’ volleyball all-star game
The Miami Dade Boys’ Volleyball All Star Game is May 21 at iMater Academy.
The North will roster players from districts 23-27, and The South will include players from districts 28-32.
