Westminster Academy, Westminster Christian, Doral Academy softball teams win region titles
The Westminster Academy girls’ softball team did it again, winning in extra innings.
The Lions defeated (Fort Pierce) John Carroll 11-6 in eight innings in a 2A region final.
Five runs in the top of the eighth sealed the region championship. It marked their second consecutive extra inning victory in the postseason.
Westminster Academy went ahead 3-1 in the first inning. John Carroll evened things in the third. The Lions scored twice in the fourth for a 5-3 advantage. Westminster Academy added a run in the sixth. The Rams (11-10) scored three times to force extra innings.
Tied at six in the top of the eighth, Westminster Academy’s Rebecca Forrester hit a lead-off a triple. Kamryn Casey followed with an RBI triple, scoring Forrester. Dianna Montidoro singled, and Kyleigh Hope delivered a 2-run a triple. Olivia Holland also tripled, scoring Hope. Emma Wallhoff capped the rally with an RBI single.
In the bottom of the eighth, winning pitcher Dianna Montidoro got a pop out to shortstop and a strikeout, before walking the next batter. Then Sophia Loreto, who homered earlier in the game, flew out to right field to end the game.
Kamryn Casey was 3 for 3 with a triple, two runs and two RBI. Kyleigh Hope went 2 for 5 with a triple and three RBI.
Olivia Holland was 2 for 5 with a double, a triple, two runs and three RBI. Rebecca Forrester went 2 for 4 with a triple and two runs. Dianna Montidoro pitched eight innings, striking out six for the win.
In the region semifinal, Westminster Academy edged Florida Christian 8-7 in eight innings. The Lions rallied twice for the win.
Trailing 4-0, Westminster Academy scored three times in the fourth. Down 5-3, the Lions tied it in the fifth. In the eighth inning after Florida Christian took a 7-5 lead, Westminster Academy rallied again with three runs for the win.
The Lions (17-11) play (St. Petersburg) Canterbury (21-9) in a FHSAA 2A State Semifinal on Tuesday in Clermont.
Westminster Christian softball
The Westminster Christian girls’ softball team defeated (West Palm Beach) Oxbridge Academy 17-9 for a 3A region championship.
This marked the softball program’s 14th regional title with six state titles.
Trailing 5-3, the Warriors exploded for nine runs in the top of the sixth and five runs in the top of the seventh.
Tied at one in the top of the fifth, Hailey Donovan led off the inning for Westminster Christian with her 15th home run of the season. The Warriors (23-6) added one more run in the inning. She later hit her 16th home run of the season in the seventh inning.
Behind 3-1, Oxbridge rallied with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Hailey Donovan was 2 for 4 with two home runs, two walks, two runs and two RBI. Cassidy Stouffer went 3 for 5, with a triple, two runs and four RBI. Jules Dyer was 2 for 4 with a walk, two runs and three RBI. Daniella Alvarez was 2 for 5 with a double, three runs and an RBI. Sammy Suarez was 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI. Lindsey Burroughs was 1 for 3 with two walks and a run, and Brooke Rebhan went 2 for 6 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Bridget Haller scored twice.
Isabella Artiles was 3 for 4 with a walk, two stolen bases, two runs and two RBI. Even more important she was the starting pitcher and went the distance for the win, going seven innings and allowing nine runs (five earned) and striking out three.
The ThunderWolves finished the season 20-2-1.
Westminster Christian plays in the FHSAA 3A State Semifinal against (Tampa) Academy of the Holy Names (17-5) on Wednesday in Clermont.
Doral softball
The Doral Academy girls’ softball team defeated Cooper City 3-1 for a 6A region title.
Junior pitcher Alyssa Zabala went the distance, allowing one run while scattering nine hits and walking one. She struck out eight.
The Firebirds (27-2) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when sophomore Ana Richiez scored. Cooper City tied it in the top of the sixth as Amanda Gettys scored.
In the bottom of the inning, seventh grader Anabela Abdullah hit a winning 2-run home run. In the top of the seventh, Zabala and the defense prevented a rally.
Eighth grader Isabella Melley, who scored on Abdullah’s home run, added two hits and walked. Senior Kassandra Machado doubled and walked. Senior Amanda Ramirez walked twice and singled.
Cooper City’s season came to a close at 20-5.
Doral Academy plays (New Port Richey) Mitchell (22-6) in a FHSAA 6A State Semifinal on Friday in Clermont.
