Champagnat baseball on a roll, and area boys’ volleyball teams reach state elite eight

In a 2A region quarterfinal, the Champagnat baseball team edged Sagemont 1-0 behind the outstanding performance of winning pitcher Kevin Rodriguez.

The right-hander tossed 6 2/3 shutout innings, allowing five hits and striking out eight. Justin Aguas went 1 for 1 and scored the winner on an RBI double by Jurrangelo Cijntje in the bottom of the third.

Reliever Kaylan Nicasia closed the game (1/3 of an inning, getting the final out) for the save. Nicolas Rivera, Alexander Pereira and Yoel Rojas added hits.

In a rematch of the district finals, the district champion Lions (18-6) ) play Miami Christian (8-15) on Wednesday in a 2A region semifinal. Miami Christian beat Westminster Academy in a region quarterfinal.

Prior, Champagnat beat Miami Christian 5-3 for the district title. Trailing 3-2, the Lions scored twice in the fourth and an insurance run in the fifth for the come-from-behind victory.

Nicolas Rivera was 2 for 3 with a double, a walk and two runs. Kevin Rodriguez went 1 for 3 with a run and two RBI. Justin Aguas was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Jurrangelo Cijntje and Kaylan Nicasia also scored.

Cijntje recorded the win, allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits and one walk, while striking out 12 in five innings. K.Rodriguez earned the save with two shutout innings, giving up one walk and no hits, while striking out three.

The district champs and district runners-up qualify for regionals.

More baseball

6A Region Quarterfinal: Doral Academy 10, South Boward 0: Winning pitcher Renzo Gonzalez struck out eight in three shutout innings. He helped his cause, hitting his ninth home run of the season.

Also, Anthony Bordone homered and drove in three runs. Manny Marin was 1-2 with a home run and two RBI, and Gaby Gutierrez went 2-2.

In a battle of district champs, the Firebirds (23-4-1) host Goleman (14-10-1) on Wednesday in a 6A region semifinal. Goleman edged Hialeah 3-2 in a region quarterfinal.

Boys’ volleyball

Archbishop McCarthy in Southwest Ranches in Broward County hosts the FHSAA State Boys’ Volleyball Championships.

The state quarterfinals are Friday, and the state semifinals and finals are Saturday.

Local teams Cardinal Gibbons, Miami High, South Broward, and Southwest qualified for Friday’s quarterfinals.

Region Championship: Cardinal Gibbons d. Cypress Bay 25-21, 25-22, 25-15: Player of the Match: Logan Keothavy 14 service points, 6 aces, 9 kills, 2 blocks, 6 digs. The Chiefs (19-6) play (Orlando) Freedom (27-2) in the state quarterfinals on Friday.

Region Championship: Southwest d. Palmetto 25-16, 25-12, 26-24: Jack Hershman 15 kills, 2 aces; Chris Aoun 6 kills, 1 ace; Alessandro DeLaO 8 kills, 4 digs, 2 aces. The Eagles (24-5) play (Ocala) Forest (16-0) in the state quarterfinals on Friday.

Region Championship: South Broward d. Krop 25-22, 25-17, 25-15: Players of the Match: Jonathan Hurst and Oshane Farquharson. In a region semifinal, South Broward beat Flanagan 25-27, 25-20, 25-23, 25-7. The Bulldogs (14-7) play Miami High in the state quarterfinals on Friday.

Region Championship: Miami High d. Hialeah Gardens 25-19, 25-22, 25-19: Players of the Match: Hector Alarcon, Andy Garcia and Luis Navarro. The Stingarees (26-2) advance to the state quarterfinals on Friday to play South Broward.

Boys’ volleyball all-star game

The Miami Dade Boys’ Volleyball All Star Game is May 21 at iMater Academy.

The North will spotlight players from districts 23-27, and The South will feature players from districts 28-32

Each coach can nominate 1-2 players (or more) and two 15-player rosters will be selected for the game.

Limited amount spectators will be allowed to attend. The game will be streamed on YouTube.
