More state tennis champions from the area: Ferguson, Krop, Pine Crest & University School

What a week of tennis for individuals and teams from Broward and Miami Dade counties last week at the FHSAA State Championships. Here are some more highlights from the locals.

In Class 2A boys, Pine Crest’s No.1 player Jameson Corsillo capped off an undefeated season by winning the overall boys’ singles title on Friday.

He also helped unbeaten Pine Crest win the 2A boys’ team state championship on Thursday.

Plus, on Friday, Corsillo and partner Andrew Pereverzev, Pine Crest’s No.1 doubles duo, were 2A overall boys’ doubles state runners-up.

Corsillo finished the season 17-0 in No.1 singles, and he and Pereverzev were 7-2 at No.1 doubles.

Pine Crest (14-0) defeated Pensacola on Wednesday, Gulliver Prep on Thursday morning and Satellite on Thursday afternoon for the team title. The Panthers went 9-0 in the regular season, 2-0 at regionals and 3-0 at state.

The undefeated team state champs are Jameson Corsillo, Andrew Pereverzev, Kenneth Chan, Jason Berinstein, Krisztian Meszaros, Jonathan Fromkin. The head coach is Corey Marsh, and the assistant coach is Mason Durbin. Kasey Hamaway is the director of tennis.

Corsillo beat the No.1 players from Jacksonville Bolles (ghost draw Wednesday), Pensacola (Wednesday) and Satellite (Thursday) to advance to the state overall singles championship round on Friday, where he defeated the No.1 player from (Delray Beach) American Heritage.

In doubles, Corsillo and Pereverzev beat the No.1 doubles teams from Pensacola, Gulliver Prep and Satellite to reach the state overall doubles championship round.

University School tennis

In 2A girls, University School’s standout tandem Ava Grnja and Daniela Porges won the overall state girls’ doubles championship, besting the No.1 doubles’ team from state champion (Plantation) American Heritage.

To qualify for that overall state girls’ doubles final, they won the individual state girls’ doubles title by going 3-0. They beat No.1 doubles teams from Fernandina Beach, Jensen Beach and LaSalle.

At districts, they defeated the No.1 doubles team from Pine Crest in the finals.

Krop Tennis

In 4A boys, Krop’s No.1 doubles tandem Jonathan Irwanto and Sebastian Rondon won an overall boys’ state doubles championship.

This unbeaten pairing anchored the 4A boys’ team championship win on Thursday and followed up Friday by winning that overall doubles title.

En route to the state team title, the Lightning defeated Winter Park on Wednesday, Cypress Bay on Thursday morning and Vero Beach on Thursday afternoon to finish 9-1 (4-1 regular season, 2-0 regionals, 3-0 state).

The team state champs are Sebatian Rondon, Jonathan Irwanto, Andres Escalona, Jaime Perez Duran, Bautista Lotter. The coaches are Freddy Azucey and Carlos Maehama.

Irwanto and Rondon beat the No.1 doubles pairings from Winter Park, Cypress Bay and Vero Beach. They beat the No.1 doubles team from (Orlando) Olympia in the overall state doubles finals.

Ferguson tennis

In 4A individual boys’ action, Ferguson’s No.1 player Julen Morgan won the individual singles state title. After a first round bye, he went 2-0 against the No.1 players from (Orlando) Olympia and Wellington on Wednesday and Thursday.

On Friday, he finished as the 4A overall boys’ singles state runner-up with an 11-1 record. A senior, he signed with NCAA Division I Purdue.

Morgan also was state runner-up in No.1 individual doubles, teaming with Kenden Aguilera on Thursday. After a bye, they went 1-1, beating the No.1 doubles team from (Sanford) Seminole. They went 10-1 in the season.

Aguilera, also a senior, signed with NCAA Division III St. Lawrence University in upstate New York

The various tournaments were throughout Seminole County in Central Florida.

State basketball honors

The Florida Association of Basketball Coaches (FABC) and Source Hoops presented the 2020-2021 Boys’ Class 6A All-State Teams.

Including three from Broward and Miami Dade counties, 15 players (first team, second team, third team) represented the best of the best for schools that participate in Class 6A.

Those players were selected based on in-person evaluations, a review of all-area teams selected by media from around the state and recognition from the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches.

Walter Clayton, 6-2 Sr, Bartow; Ryan Sanchez, 5-10 Sr, Mater Academy; Tre Carroll, 6-7 Sr, Punta Gorda Charlotte; Ryan Davis, 6-4 Jr, Stuart Martin County; Dean Gabrelcik, 6-5 Sr, Tarpon Springs East Lake.

SECOND TEAM

Micah Octave, 6-5 Sr, Boca Raton Olympic Heights; Jimel Lane, 6-6 Jr, Mater Academy; Marcellus Thomas, 6-4 Jr, Lakeland Kathleen; Brennan Lorient, 6-8 Jr, Ocala Forest; Anthony Bittar, 6-4 Sr, Tarpon Springs East Lake.

THIRD TEAM

Javian McCollum, 6-1 Sr, Fort Myers; Zyhir Sims, 6-4 SR, Jacksonville Fletcher; Charleston Ponds, 6-4 Sr, Lake City Columbia; Xavier Washington, 6-6 Sr, Palmetto; Stephan Mereus, 5-10 Sr, South Plantation.

Boys’ volleyball

Region Semifinal: Krop d. Hialeah Education Academy 25-9, 25-13, 25-20: Ben Bregman assisted on 98% of all kills, 21 service points, 3 kills; Great back row passing rate of 98% from Gabe Levin, Ryan Curtis, Dylan Gale, Steven Benaim; Aden Ben-Saadon 13 kills, 9 service points, 2 aces; Amaar Maniar 6 kills, 1 block; Michael Odzer 9 kills, 3 blocks; Joshua Behar 7 kills; Ethan Ohana 1 block, 5 service points; Benaim also 10 service points, 1 ace.

Region Semifinal: Hialeah Gardens d. iMater Charter Academy 24-26, 25-19, 27-29, 25-23, 16-14: Ariel Lopez 18 receptions,12 digs, 1 ace; Alex Cabrera 32 receptions, 26 digs, 4 aces; Jordan Urbaez 6 blocks, 4 kills.
