Riviera Prep girls’ tennis wins first region title; Gulliver, Palmetto, more teams to state

The Riviera Prep girls’ tennis team beat Carrollton in the region finals to qualify for state in Class 1A.

This marks the first time the Riviera Prep girls’ tennis team advances to state. The young Bulldogs feature two sixth graders, a seventh grader, a freshman, a sophomore, and a junior.

“It’s been a very challenging year for everyone,” Riviera Prep Athletic Director Courtney Young said. “However, to see one of the youngest teams in state history persevere through the adversity makes this one of the most incredible moments for our school and our kids.”

At the four-team district tournament, Carrollton won the title with 16 points, edging Riviera Prep by two points.

Riviera Prep then beat Miami Country Day in a region semifinal to set-up a show down, head-to-head, with Carrollton in the region finals.

In those region finals, the Bulldogs beat Carrollton 4-3. Trailing 3-2 after singles play, Riviera Prep swept both doubles matches to clinch the upset victory.

Riviera Prep’s No. 2 doubles tandem (sixth grader Leyla Kilgour and freshman Sophia Armenta) went to a tiebreaker, winning 10-8.

The clincher came at No. 1 doubles with sophomore Milagros Lardiez and seventh grader Sasha Kilgour, winning 7-6 (7-4), 6-1. Down 5-2 in the first set, they rallied to win in the tiebreaker.

In No. 1 singles, Sasha Kilgour also rallied to win, after losing the first set 6-2. Leyla Kilgour won an important team point at No.3 singles.

Riviera Prep is pleased to announce a state-of-the-art, nine-court tennis facility, opening near the end of May.
