Who will be water polo champs — Gulliver Prep, St. Thomas Aquinas, Westminster Academy?

One last ride for Gulliver Prep — at least with this cast.

Six of the seven starters on the top-ranked Gulliver Raiders boys’ water polo team are seniors, and this weekend represents their final chance to add to the state title they won in 2019.

“Any of our six boys would be a star on other teams,” Gulliver coach Carroll Vaughan said. “There’s only one ball, and that becomes the challenge. We’ve had to teach them to share the ball.”

Those six seniors have all been playing water polo together since the seventh grade, including the Kay-Ramos triplets (Kamal, Awwal and Hayaat). Kamal is the goalie and likely the team’s MVP, Vaughan said.

The other three seniors are JC Pompa, who will play for Bucknell next season; Bruno Rebessi, who is the team’s hard-driving leader; and Jeronimo Dacharry.

Bailey Quintero, a junior, is Gulliver’s only non-senior starter.

“I’ve never had a team that has been together as long as this one,” said Vaughan, who has been coaching 24 years.

The Raiders, 23-0 this season and 65-1 over the past three years, are two wins away from the program’s fifth state title. The Raiders won state in 2019, and they seemed to on their way to a repeat last year when the pandemic ended their season with a 17-0 record.

On Friday night at 8:15, Gulliver will play St. Thomas Aquinas (19-7) in a state semifinal. Dr. Phillips (16-2) plays Lake Brantley (18-1) in the other semifinal. The final is at 4 p.m. on Saturday, and all matches are set for the Gian Zumpano Aquatic Center at Belen Jesuit.

Belen will also host the girls’ championships. Gulliver (15-0) will play Westminster Academy (13-2) at 4:45 p.m. on Friday. The other girls’ semifinal will feature Lake Nona (16-0) against Seminole (12-6).

The girls’ final is set for Saturday at 2 p.m.

Lake Nona coach Alex Bennett led Gulliver to four state titles from 2005 to 2007, including three on the girls’ side. He has yet to win a state title since leaving Gulliver.

In other words, Gulliver and Lake Nona — the top two girls’ seeds in the state — could make for a dramatic final.

First, though, Gulliver will have to get past Westminster Academy, which is led by the three Weissman sisters: Emma (team-high 79 goals); Abby (53 goals); and Olivia (28 goals).

Gulliver is powered by Stanford recruit Alyssa Pascual, who leads the Raiders in goals (61) and assists (32).

“She’s the best player in the state,” Vaughan said.

Since Florida’s state finals began in water polo in 2005, the same school has swept the boys’ and girls’ championships only once — Gulliver in 2007 under Bennett.

Gulliver is the only school that has a shot at sweeping this year, but the boys’ team will have to defeat an Aquinas team led by senior Luksa Vlasic.

Aquinas, though, lost both of its regular-season matches against Gulliver by scores of 18-5 on March 1 and 24-12 on March 19.

Vaughan said Rebessi is a key leader for Gulliver.

“He pushes his teammates,” Vaughan said. “You could be his best friend or a kid he doesn’t talk to that much. It doesn’t matter. He will push you to get better.”
