Big win for South Broward volleyball, and Palmer Trinity softball pitcher makes history
The South Broward boys’ volleyball team handed Cypress Bay its first loss 25-21, 25-22, 25-21.
Cameron Thorne led the Bulldogs with 14 kills, 20 serve receives and eight digs, and Jonathan Hurst recorded the highest kills percentage and five blocks. Oshane Farquharson added five kills, 10 assists and two blocks.
Before the match, South Broward coach Leo Jimenez said: “Guys, we need to start making a mark for ourselves; people need to know we are here to play. Last week we did great against Flanagan, and today we have Cypress; so let’s go.”
Go they did. Mission accomplished.
The district tournament is another mission, and it’s April 26, hosted by South Broward.
Chaminade-Madonna and McArthur will be competing, too.
Gulliver water polo
The undefeated Gulliver Prep girls’ water polo team defeated Miami Country Day 21-10 in the regional finals, advancing to state.
Captain Alissa Pascual led the Raiders (15-0) with 8 goals, 3 assists and 3 steals. Sophomore Gaby Montalvo had 6 goals and 3 steals, and Giorgia Pascual added 4 goals, 1 assist and 3 steals.
Emily Miller led the team in steals with 5 and totaled 3 goals and 4 assists. Goalkeeper Allison Keepax had 10 blocks, 1 assist and 2 steals.
Gulliver Prep battles Westminster Academy in the state semifinal, hosted by Belen Jesuit on Friday.
Cerda sets mark
Winning pitcher Emmy Cerda struck out a school record 17 batters to lead the Palmer Trinity softball team over LaSalle 6-0.
She also went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI. Megan Keller was 2-3, and Elizabeth Sulkes was 1-3 with an RBI for the Falcons (8-5).
