American Heritage boys’ volleyball

The American Heritage boys’ volleyball team evened its mark at 2-2 on Tuesday by defeating Pine Crest 25-22, 20-25, 25-22, 25-22.

Leading the Patriots were setter Daylan Holness, outside hitter Tyler Brant, middle hitter Sebastian Carrizosa, outside hitter Matthew Jeong, libero Leonardo Marques, and the twins JayaSai Somasundaram (opposite side hitter) and VijayaSai Somasundaram (middle hitter).

“It’s been challenging this season, and we’re just happy to have a team competing,” said Coach Lisa Moreau, director of volleyball for the school. “We have a good amount of experienced players from last year, and the school is being incredibly safe, requiring our varsity athletes to do online schooling.

“We’re practicing a little later, and we’re wearing our masks. The players are making the most of it with positive attitudes, and they are really fun to coach.”

Moreau is in her fourth season at American Heritage, coaching the boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams. She is a former coach with the club program Hurricane Volleyball in Weston. She played high school volleyball in Massachusetts. An injury ended her college playing endeavors, but she transitioned nicely to coaching, something she’s been doing since her teenage days.

As for her American Heritage boys’ team, the Patriots will play Western in a district final in late April to see who advances to regionals. Because of the pandemic, it’s only a two-team district this season.

The Wildcats beat American Heritage in four sets earlier in the season, and they will have a regular season rematch on Wednesday.

Last season there was no season (because of Covid) and no Senior Night, but this year, American Heritage is not only competing but will have a Senior Night.

Girls’ Basketball

The inaugural Orange Bowl Florida High School Girls’ Basketball Showcase, presented by Baptist Health, will tip off on Saturday, April 10 at the David Posnack Jewish Community Center in Davie.

This free, one-day event is designed to give South Florida’s junior and senior girls basketball players the opportunity to showcase their talents to NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA colleges and junior colleges from around the country.

The Orange Bowl’s mission and vision is to promote and serve South Florida in order to inspire youth, engage the community and enhance the economy. The Orange Bowl Florida High School Basketball Showcase presented by Baptist Health meets these goals by providing an opportunity for young student-athletes to leverage their athletic and academic skills to attend college and ultimately earn a degree.

Similar to the Orange Bowl’s high school football showcase, which annually generates an estimated $1 million in financial aid and scholarships to student-athletes, participants will run through a series of tests and drills designed to best display each individual’s talents at their respective positions. During the basketball showcase, student-athletes and college representatives will have the opportunity to meet to discuss financial aid opportunities and other pertinent information.

Registration is free for all student-athletes and participating colleges. Student-athletes must be a graduating high school senior or a high school junior who has not accepted a scholarship offer from a Division I basketball program. In addition, participants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Have a 2.5 GPA or higher in 16 Core Courses; AND
  • Have an SAT score of 920 (math and verbal only) or higher (NAIA Requirement: 970 if test was taken after May 1, 2019); OR
  • Have a composite ACT Score of 18 or higher or a sum score of 68 or higher

The Orange Bowl Florida High School Girls’ Basketball Showcase, presented by Baptist Health, is possible thanks to the generosity of presenting sponsor Baptist Health and associate sponsors AEA, Ambetter from Sunshine Health, American Airlines, Cinch Home Services, KEMET, Nike, PDQ, Tire Kingdom and Toyota.
