Flanagan avenges first loss to win boys’ volleyball tournament; plus more sports results

Flanagan avenged its only loss of the season by beating Cardinal Gibbons 25-23, 25-17 to win the Cardinal Gibbons Jungle Queen Boys’ Volleyball Tournament in Fort Lauderdale.

“Complete satisfaction to win the title,” Flanagan coach Mike Langford said. “We absolutely have a chance to compete for the state title, if we can avoid injuries.”

Junior setter Jackson Lahey led the sixth state-ranked Falcons with 24 assists in 52 attempts in the finals. He has amassed 243 assists this season. Junior right side hitter Kory Grant, who has 79 kills this season, also played well with 11 kills and a .529 hitting efficiency against Gibbons, and junior outside hitter Mason Martindale recorded three aces.

Senior middle blocker Jabbar Morta had a high hitting efficiency (.364) with five kills and two blocks in the finals. Senior libero Raymond Rapaglia anchored the defense with 13 service receptions.

In the semifinals, Flanagan upset the Tampa Bay Heat 25-23, 13-25, 15-11. Grant made three big blocks against the state’s second-ranked team.

“It was super exciting beating the Heat as it went down to the wire,” Langford said. “We had a lot of blocks in that match, very exciting and intense. It was the best I’ve seen us play this season.”

Senior outside hitter Bryan Povea is leading the Falcons with 83 kills this season.

Also in the semifinals, Cardinal Gibbons bested Southwest 25-19, 25-20.

Flanagan (9-1) is 2-1 against the Chiefs, including an earlier regular season win. Cardinals Gibbons handed the Falcons their lone defeat of the season in pool play on day one of the tourney.
