The boys and girls high school soccer teams at Westminster Academy advance in regional
It was definitely a good 24 hours of soccer for Westminster Academy last weekend.
First came a 2-0 victory by the girls over South Florida HEAT on Friday night in a Region 4-2A semifinal at WA. Then the boys’ team traveled to North Miami Beach on Saturday night to take on Scheck Hillel in another Region 4-2A semi and won in dramatic fashion.
While the girls game didn’t have much late-game drama, as freshman Lilly Nava scored both goals and goalkeeper Becca Forrester pitched the shutout in front of the net, that wasn’t the case with the boys.
A game that was less than a minute away from going to overtime in a scoreless tie got untied when Micah Lewis scored to give the Lions a 1-0 victory. The win gave the boys team, a No. 3 seed, its first-ever berth in a regional final. The Lions will look to punch their ticket to the state final four when they host No. 5 Doral Divine Savior Academy on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Ellie Farrar had an assist on one of Nava’s goals as the girls team, the No. 1 seed, will host No. 2 Lake Worth Christian in a Region 4-2A final on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
▪ Region 4-3A semifinal: Miami Country Day 3, LaSalle 2 (OT, 4-3 PKs): After each team scored a pair of goals in the first half, Erik Pantin and Victor Destri for MCD, Kamani Turner and Mateo Manizaga for host LaSalle, the game remained scoreless for the remainder of regulation and overtime before the Spartans won it in the penalty kick shootout.
When a LaSalle player hit the post on the fifth PK attempt, Lukas Iera nailed the game-winner for MCD which will not travel to take on No.1 seed and unbeaten University School Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Spartans (14-8-1) will be looking to punch only their second-ever trip to the state final four and first since 1989.
