Coral Reef’s Tianna Rivera and Lourdes’ Mia Atrio score in 1-1 girls’ soccer battle

In what clearly could’ve been a preview of bigger things to come in the postseason, two heavyweight girls’ soccer programs, Coral Reef and Lourdes went at it like the two great teams they are on Monday night.

When it was over, there was no winner as the Barracudas and Bobcats, who have met each of the last three years in the regional playoffs, battled to a 1-1 tie before a big crowd at Columbus High School.

The game was still scoreless at the second half water break before Reef (11-0-1) took the lead two minutes later when Tianna Rivera broke free and beat Lourdes keeper Mia Alexander one-on-one.

Eight minutes later, with just less than 10 minutes left, Lourdes got the equalizer when University of Miami commit Mia Atrio took a long curling pass down low from Isabel Guisasola and knocked it past Reef keeper Amanda Fernandez. Lourdes had another good scoring chance in the game’s final minute but Fernandez made a nice save.

“It’s always a tough game whenever we play Reef,” said Lourdes coach Ramiro Vengocheo. “We feel that playing them relatively early in the season will prepare us for the postseason where we want to make another run at state this year. We have a lot of positives to build on from this game.”
