North beats South for third in a row in 23rd annual BCAA All-Star Football Classic
Plantation quarterback Gerard Nesbitt didn’t have to do much to lead the North to its third consecutive victory over the South in the 23rd annual BCAA All-Star Football Classic on a rain-soaked field Nova High in Davie.
His 8-yard scoring pass to Blanche Ely wide receiver Darnell Deas with 4:49 left in the first half proved to be the difference in the 9-2 victory.
The win improved the North’s lead in the series to 15-8. The final score was also the second lowest scoring game in the 23 years of the event. The all-time lowest was a 7-0 South victory in 1999.
Nesbitt, who finished the night with 75 yards passing and another 40 rushing, was named the Offensive Player of the Game for the North.
The South earned its first points on a safety with 5:03 left in the third. Unfortunately, the South side was unable to generate any offense.
It had a chance early in the third quarter but on a fourth-and-goal at the 3, running back Jaylen Taylor was stopped at the 1.
The North defense held the South to 69 yards of total offense. Leading the North on defense was linebacker Wydmere Garcon of Deerfield Beach.
As for the South’s top players, Flanagan quarterback Marcus Nowell was named the Offensive MVP, and Everglades linebacker Jaden Gray earned the Defensive MVP.
Balance Ely running back Shomari Lawrence was the Otis Gray Award winner for overall outstanding play. He finished with 89 yards rushing on nine carries.
The first half was played in a hard rain fall, which kept the scoring down. Overall, the two sides combined for 14 punts
The North added a 26-yard field goal by Douglas kicker Mason Hall on the final play of the game.
Lourdes tops Krop in girls’ basketball
Houston Rockets star James Harden buried 10 three-pointers Wednesday night to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers. Lourdes Academy’s Madison Porras nearly matched him.
Porras caught fire, draining nine three-pointers from beyond the arc and needed every one of them as she finished with 41 points to lead the Lourdes girls’ high school basketball team to a close 68-64 win against host Krop on Wednesday night.
Porras, who is averaging 21 points, also added five assists as the Bobcats (10-0) remained perfect. Lindsey Weingard led the way for Krop (4-1) with 20 points, nine steals and four assists.
“I have three terrific seniors leading the team this year and Madison has been outstanding so far,” said Lourdes coach Chris McKeon, whose team’s only loss was to Miami High in a preseason classic contest. “We’re off to a great start, but it’s a long tough road in front of us with teams like St. Thomas Aquinas and South Broward down the road, so we’ll see what happens.”
Julia Vazquez and Alicea Bagliery are the other two seniors McKeon referred to and Vazquez also turned in a major contribution in the win with 19 points, six rebounds and five steals. Annie Lassegue (10 points, eight rebounds) and Emily Mayor (10 points, five rebounds) turned in solid efforts the night before as they led Lourdes to a 50-42 district win at home over Hialeah.
