Columbus’ Henry Parrish wins Nat Moore Trophy as top football player in South Florida
Columbus running back Henry Parrish won the inaugural CBS 4 Nat Moore Trophy, honoring the top high school football player in any division in Miami-Dade, Broward or Monroe counties. The award was presented Tuesday night before a packed house at the North Sideline Club at Hard Rock Stadium.
Parrish is running away with the Miami-Dade County rushing title, with 2,319 yards and 31 touchdowns. He can add to that when the Explorers take on Apopka in the 8A state championship game Friday night in Daytona Beach.
“It’s a real honor to receive this award,” said Parrish, who is committed to the University of Pittsburgh. “There are so many great high school players in South Florida, so to be named one of the top four finalists, let alone to win it, is very humbling.”
The nominees were chosen by former players, coaches and members of the media, including the Miami Herald.
The other nominees were Belen Jesuit running back Don Chaney Jr., a University of Miami commit, and two Florida commits, St. Thomas Aquinas linebacker Derek Wingo and Norland offensive lineman Issiah Walker.
“He’s a very special young man and very deserving of this award,” said first-year Columbus coach David Dunn, who jokingly said his only regret was that he only got to coach Parrish for one year. “His cutting ability and ability to explode into open space is what perhaps separates him from so many other players. On top of it, he’s an unbelievable receiver out of the backfield as well. He’s just the whole package, but also a very humble and hard-working young man as well, which is really going to help him excel at the next level.”
Most remember Moore, now vice president of special projects and alumni relations for the Dolphins, for his 13-year NFL career as a wide receiver. But he was also a high school hero for Miami Edison in the late 1960s. He was a star running back at Florida before being drafted by the Dolphins in 1974.
He recorded 510 receptions for 7,546 yards and 74 touchdowns, ranking in the top three in franchise history in all three categories.
“When I played here in high school and for the Dolphins, never in my wildest imagination did I ever think I would get an award named after me,” Moore said. “I always thought getting my name up in the Dolphins Ring of Honor was big time and indeed it was, but this is twice as big.
“To have an award that goes to the best high school football player in South Florida every year from now on really means that you’ve done all the right things, not only on the field but off the field as well. You become the example of what kids strive to be and that’s truly gratifying.”
