Dillard boys’ basketball downs Calvary Christian in matchup of coach and former player

The first coaching matchup between Dillard Hall of Fame coach Darryl Burrows and his protégé, Calvary Christian’s Cilk McSweeney, resulted in the teacher getting the best of his student.

Smooth-shooting Chandler Mack scored nine of his game-high 20 points in the pivotal fourth quarter as Dillard and its seven time state champion coach turned back Calvary 55-45 at the Kreul Classic Basketball Showcase at Monarch High School on Saturday. 6-8 senior Jaylen Haynes added 13 points for Dillard.

“I have faced former players before,” Burrows said. “I want this to stay friends. Cilk is a great guy who runs a tremendous program. Cilk and his assistant Steve Allen, who also played for me, are like my sons. It was time for them to get a game, and I gave it to them.”

The Burrows-McSweeney roots run deep. In 2001 McSweeney helped Burrows win the second of his historic state title four-peat, and in 2017, Burrows won his seventh state championship, McSweeney won his first, becoming the first former Broward player to capture a state championship as a head coach. On Saturday, McSweeney posted a touching IG tribute to Burrows, who he seeks counsel with regularly.

“Coach Burrows is someone I can always count on to give me great advice,” McSweeney said. “Not just X’s and O’s but different situation with kids. There is nobody that does it better in managing talented players. That is something I seen him do when I was with him in 2001 and he has done since.”

Despite an off night from Gregg Glenn, a member of the 2019 USA U-16 team, who was saddled with foul trouble and finished with 7 points, Calvary went on a 17-7 run at the end of the third quarter and pulled to within 50-45 with 1:28 left in the fourth quarter.
