This Mater Academy runner qualifies for Foot Locker national finals in San Diego

Looking to establish herself as one of the top female cross country runners of all-time in Miami-Dade County, Mater Academy senior Valerie Lustra took one more giant step toward that last Saturday.

Competing in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championship South Reiongals in Charlotte, North Carolina, Lustra went up against 139 other runners from the southeast United States and came in with a sixth-place finish with a time of 17:26. Jenna Hutchins from Johnson City, Tennessee had the winning time of 16:54.

Needing a 10th-place finish or better, Lustra qualified for the Foot Locker Cross Country National Finals set to be held at Balboa Park in San Diego, California, on Dec. 14. It will be her second year in a row competing in the event as she finished 26th at the 2018 national finals.
