Inaugural Nat Moore Trophy to be awarded to top local high school football player Dec. 10

Many remember Nat Moore for his outstanding career as a Miami Dolphins wide receiver. But what many may not recall is that Moore was a local high school hero back in the late 60’s for Miami Edison, even helping lead the Red Raiders to the 1970 state title.

With that in mind, CBS-4 has named a trophy in his honor recognizing the top high school football player in Miami-Dade, Broward or Monroe county. The inaugural presentation of the CBS 4 Nat Moore Trophy is set for Dec. 10, will be held at Hard Rock Stadium beginning at 5 p.m. and the four nominees were recently announced.

Belen Jesuit running back and University of Miami commit Don Chaney Jr. leads the list and is followed by Columbus running back Henry Parrish. The University of Pittsburgh commit is the runaway rushing leader in Miami-Dade County with 2,192 yards heading into Friday’s 8A state semifinal against Deerfield Beach.

Also nominated were two University of Florida commits, St. Thomas Aquinas linebacker Derek Wingo and Issiah Walker, an offensive tackle from Norland.

The nominees will be voted on by a panel of former players, coaches and members of the media including the Miami Herald and the winner will be announced and presented with the Nat Moore Trophy, a cast-bronze image of Moore, at the Dec.10 event.

Moore went on to become star running back at the University of Florida in the early 70s before being drafted by the Dolphins in 1974. Over his 13-year playing career, he recorded 510 receptions for 7,546 yards and 74 touchdowns, ranking in the top three in franchise history in all three of those categories.
