After seven years running the Miami Springs football program, Darryel Bethune resigned his post on Monday morning when he turned in his letter of resignation.

The Golden Hawks finished 6-4 this past season but Bethune dealt with disciplinary issues throughout the season, culminating in an ugly brawl following the team’s season finale Nov. 1 against Hialeah-Miami Lakes at Milander Stadium.

“I met with my players last Friday to let them know what was happening before turning in my letter of resignation,” said Bethune, who will continue to work and teach at the school as an ESE teacher dealing with special needs kids but also indicated he will keep future coaching options open.

When asked if he was forced to resign, Bethune would only say “Mr. Smith [principal Ed Smith], and I had a good meeting and came to a mutual agreement that it would be best to move on in a new direction. I thanked him for the opportunity to coach this program for the last seven seasons and we shook hands.”

Bethune, who played football at Springs in the late 1970s, and coached at Springs under Buddy Goins in the 1980s and 1990s, took over in 2012 inheriting a winless team from 2011. Just one season later, Springs went 7-3 and broke an 18-year playoff drought.

“One thing I was very happy about and very proud of was that I was able to come back to my old school where I played and coached as an assistant for so many years,” said Bethune, who finished 35-35 in his seven years at Springs. “I never thought I would be he head coach and I’ve always loved my time at this school. I’ve always been and always will be a Hawk.”
