The state football finals weren’t the only big thing going on in the Orlando area last weekend. That’s because Montverde Academy hosted the Women’s Invitational Showcase Soccer Tournament and it turned out to be quite a big trip for the Lady Mavericks of Archbishop McCarthy.

Taking on No. 1 nationally-ranked Orange Park St. John’s Country Day, a team that has won seven straight state titles, McCarthy delivered a shocking 3-0 win over St. John’s bringing an end to a 76-game winning streak dating back nearly four years. Country Day’s last loss came on Jan. 6, 2015.

Jordyn Pitter scored two goals and Riley Balser added another while Sofia Mallardi had 2 assists to lead the way for McCarthy, which improved to 8-0.

The team took that momentum and edged Ponte Vedra 3-2 in a second game as Nadia Colon, Abby Davis, and Sophia Goetz each scored one goal. Colon and Balser were named to the all tournament team.

Other standout performances were turned in by Devyn Encalada, Adriana Duque, Kelly Hastings, Kimmy Cover, Shannon Scott, and Jessica Gonzalez.

“We wanted to challenge our team as much as possible to prepare them for the post season and this kind of tournament did just that,” said McCarthy head coach Mike Sica. “The girls responded perfectly. I’m very proud of them, but we know there are many more difficult games ahead.”
