Doral Academy boys win two individual titles, finish sixth at state swimming championship

They didn’t come home with a team state title or a runner-up finish like they did in two of the past three years, but the Doral Academy boys’ swimming team put up another solid showing on Friday night.

The Firebirds won a pair of individual titles and had six top-five finishes at the Class 3A swimming and diving state championship at Stuart’s Sailfish Splash Waterpark and Aquatics Center to finish the meet in sixth place.

Doral’s two individual titles: the 200-yard medley relay, with the quartet of Nestor Montero, Aaron Rodriguez, Adrian Aguilar and Vittorio Parravano finishing in 1:33.70; and Aguilar’s 48.32-second performance in the 100-yard butterfly.

The Firebird’s also had top-five results in the 500-yard freestyle (Aguilar, 4:27.41, 4th), 200-yard freestyle relay (1:27.03, 4th) and 100-yard backstroke (Montero, 51.71, 4th).

Two other area swimmers also won state titles in the Class 3A championship on Friday and 4A championship on Saturday.

Belen Jesuit’s Andres Wong won the Class 3A boys’ 200-yard free in 1:39.02.

St. Thomas Aquinas’ Juan Zapata won the Class 4A boys’ 100-yard butterfly in 50:06.

Following Doral in the Class 3A boys’ competition was Belen Jesuit in 12th, Fort Lauderdale in 14th, South Broward in 16th, Nova in 25th, Mater Academy in a tie for 39th and Pembroke Pines Charter in a tie for 42nd.

Palmetto’s boys team finished 10th in the Class 4A championship, followed by St. Thomas Aquinas (13th), Cypress Bay (21st), Coral Glades (25th), Cooper City (27th), Coral Reef (T-35th), Stoneman Douglas (37th), Deerfield Beach (T-38th), Western (T-38th) and Southwest (40th).

Cooper City finished 14th in the Class 4A girls championship, followed by Cypress Bay (15th), St. Thomas Aquinas (17th), Hialeah Gardens (25th), Ferguson (35th), Palmetto (36th) and Stoneman Douglas (40th).

In the Class 3A girls’ championship, Doral finished 34th and Hialeah-Miami Lakes finished 42nd.

The Class 1A state championships takes place on Friday, with the Class 2A following on Saturday.
