Westminster Christian captures silver division of Smoothie King Invitational

With Sydney Bond leading the way, the host Westminster Christian girls’ volleyball team captured the Silver Division of the 11th Annual Smoothie King Invitational over the weekend.

Bond recorded 25 assists and 11 digs in the championship match as the Warriors defeated Orlando Timber Creek 25-17, 26-24 to take the silver title. Amanda Maier (8 kills, 7 digs), Alyah Cadavid (8 kills, 5 digs) and Emily Matias (8 kills, 7 digs, 2 aces) were also big contributors in the win over Timber Creek.

Bond enjoyed a big two days as she turned in solid performances in wins over Cardinal Gibbons and University School in pool play followed by Naples Gulf Coast in the semifinal, which landed Westminster (20-4) in the Silver final and was selected to the All-Tournament Team.

In the tournament’s top Gold Division, Palm Beach Gardens defeated Port Charlotte to win the title while Ransom-Everglades and St. Brendan finished third and fourth, respectively. Ellie Carrera-Justiz and Dani Ortiz from Ransom-Everglades also were named to the All-Tournament Team.

BOYS’ GOLF

Even though there are no more team champions, Monday’s GMAC Golf Championships at Redland Golf Club still crowned individual champions and Columbus senior Ryan Cano was the overall GMAC champ as he shot an even par 72. Explorers sophomore Justin Rodriguez placed second overall shooting 74 while third place went to Anthony Amorosso of Coral Reef with a three-over 75. In a scorecard playoff, fourth place went to Zach Oren of Palmetto.
