Coral Reef tops Palmetto to reach Region 4-8A softball final

They couldn’t really celebrate because of the pouring rain and nearby lightning that stopped the game. But for the third consecutive season, Coral Reef’s softball team had its season sweep of rival Palmetto.

The Barracudas erased an early 2-0 lead by scoring five runs over the next four innings to secure a rain-shortened 5-2 win over Palmetto in a Region 4-8A semifinal at Coral Reef.

The Barracudas (19-4-1) will try to earn a trip to the state semifinals for the third consecutive season Friday when they host either Pembroke Pines Flanagan or Hollywood McArthur in the regional finals. That game was postponed because of rain and will be played Wednesday.

Coral Reef’s game was ended in the bottom of the fifth inning because of rain and lightning in the area. According to FHSAA rules, the game is considered an official result after 4 1/2 innings played. Coral Reef extended its winning streak over Palmetto to 15 games.

Coral Reef second baseman Denver Keller hit a two-run, go-ahead home run in the third inning to put the Barracudas ahead for good.

Shortstop Kylan Becker went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, and left fielder Amanda Grullon had two hits including a double and an RBI.

Amanda Guglietta and Christina Vincent each drove in runs for Palmetto in the first inning to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead. Coral Reef answered in the bottom half with a run generated by hits from Becker and Cassandra Garcia and a fielder’s choice ground ball by Keller.

FLAG FOOTBALL

▪ District 32 — Pace 20, Mater Academy 0: Undefeated and unscored upon all season, the Monsignor Pace flag football team was looking to keep it that way and did just that as the Spartans captured championship by shutting out Mater Academy at Milander Stadium.

Pace (13-0) will host either Miramar or Hollywood Hills in a first round state play-in game Saturday at 4 p.m.

The Spartans got all the scoring they would need in the first half when quarterback Sabrina Cabrera found Starla Dabady for a short touchdown pass in the first quarter and then ran for a five yard score just before halftime to make it 14-0. Pace then slam-dunked the contest when Cabrera fired a perfect 52 yard strike to Destiny Wilson on the final play of the third quarter.

The only drama left was when the Lions (11-3) made it down to the Pace three yard line with six minutes left. But, on fourth down, Daisza Jones, who had six tackles for losses in the game, dove for quarterback Angelica Gutierrez as she tried to turn the corner and got her flag.
