Douglas advances to softball regional semifinals with 10-0 rout of South Plantation

A solo home run to left by Katie Peterson leading off the second inning got the Stoneman Douglas bats going, and the team moved on to the regional semifinals with a 10-0 win over South Plantation.

Douglas (23-6) opened up the third by putting three across the board — one off a single from Kayla Boyle and two more on Madison Sack’s double to left.

“We hit the ball really well, and they have a really good pitcher over there,” Douglas coach Brian Staubly said.

The Eagles looked to end it in the fifth, scoring four runs — three off a bases-clearing double from Samantha Kelly — for a 9-0 lead but stranded a runner at third.

That 10th run came across in the sixth as South Plantation had a few throwing miscues, allowing Sami Feller to score on a single from Sack.

The Paladins (16-12) advanced to the playoffs for the first time in five years after upsetting Cooper City in the District 12-8A semifinals. South Plantation, the fourth seed in its district, ends on a two-game slide, losing to Western and Douglas.

“We haven’t been here in five years, so you’re happy about that,” coach Robyn Handler said.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

▪ Barron Collier 16, Pine Crest 6: Barron Collier (22-1) scored 14 first-half goals to pull away of host Pine Crest in a state play-in game.

“We had to catch up to their speed,” Pine Crest coach Eileen Pliske said. “That got us in the first half, and there were some nerves on our part.”

Pine Crest (17-5) allowed three goals in a span of 18 seconds at one point in the first half.

Amanda Anderson led Pine Crest with three goals and two assists. Bianca Tedesco scored two goals, and Sofia Caro scored the final goal of the game.
