It’s been quite a 12 months for St. Thomas Aquinas athlete Trevon Grimes.
After winning the boys 300-meter hurdles as a freshman last May, and then following that up by helping lead the Raiders football team to a football state title in December as a wide receiver, Grimes was at it again Tuesday afternoon and evening.
That’s because he once again won the 300 hurdles at the Region 4-4A track meet at Southridge High. His win helped the Raiders to a runaway first-place finish with 99 points — 52 better than second place American.
Not to be outdone, Aquinas dominated the girls side as well. The Raiders finished with 141 points, well ahead of second-place Northeast (92).
As a result, Raiders boys and girls head coach Alex Armenteros will need to rent more than one van when they head up to the state track finals at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville on May 2.
“Everything was good out here today. A few bumps along the way but it all turned out the way we wanted,” said Grimes, who also placed second in the 100-meter hurdles. “It’s a big accomplishment, a lot of hard work on both the football field and the track has paid off for me. Now I just want to go up to Jacksonville and win another state championship for myself and make it back-to-back.”
Krystal Sparling led the way for the girls as she anchored Aquinas’ 400-meter relay team while also winning the 100-meter dash. Aquinas’ dominance was evident when teammates Alexa Cruz (the defending state champion), Margaret Schloss and Brianna Rischar finished one, two and three, respectively, in the same event: the 3,200-meter run.
“On the girls side we looked a lot better and I think we have a strong enough team to go in there and compete for a state championship next week,” Armenteros said. “The boys? We lost a few points out there and we’re going to need a lot of help in a lot of different places.”
Armenteros did witness one upset against his team in the boys 400-meter dash. Defending state champion Rasheed Tatham shockingly not even qualify for state when he placed sixth (only the top four advance).
There was plenty of excitement during the evening running finals — much of it provided by the American boys. As they did last year, teammates Ari Cogdell (first) and Shammond Williams (fourth) will both head to state in the boys 400.
The local favorite for the evening turned out to be Southridge sophomore Symone Mason. First she edged out St. Thomas’ Diamon Spaulding by two-tenths of a second to win the girls 200 meter dash and, as the anchor and the crowd yelling for her, rallied the Spartans 4x400 meter relay team to a first place finish by shooting past a Northeast runner on the last leg.
“The Southridge Express family was out in full force and when the crowd is wild, it makes the race more exciting and helps me run better,” said a huffing and puffing Mason who finished third at state last year in the same event and admitted she did not handle the inclimate Jacksonville weather conditions well. “I really let the rain effect me in an adverse way last year and I have to be ready to overcome that if it happens again.”
