It was a battle of Dade County’s finest on Saturday night when the North All-Stars took on the South in the Tournament of Champions All-Star Classic at Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar.

And in the end, the South team proved too much for the North with a 38-32 victory.

“A terrific effort by all the kids out there tonight,” said Doral Academy coach Jase Stewart, who led the South squad. “Putting together an all-star team and getting kids all on the same page is never easy, but the kids and my staff all did a great job.”

Stewart watched his team take the early lead when South Miami quarterback A.J. Wright took a naked bootleg and sprinted to the end zone from 17 yards out.

After the North stars trimmed their deficit to 7-6 on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Norland’s Alex Carr to Booker T. Washington running back Willie Davis, the South blitzed the North with three consecutive touchdowns over a 10-minute span.

Southridge running back Darren Davis got it started with a 17-yard touchdown run and, after his teammate Herman Jackson fell on a loose ball on the ensuing kickoff giving them the ball right back, Columbus quarterback Anthony Arguelles dropped a perfect pass to Palmetto wide receiver Ivan Thomas for a 34-yard score and 21-6 lead.

The South stars completed the scoring blitz midway through the second quarter when the defense came through when Stewart’s player, Doral Academy linebacker Brandon Dominguez broke through and sacked Edison QB Cory Del Prado causing a fumble.

Southridge DB Kewanaqui Smith then scooped up the loose ball and rambled 35 yards for a score to make it 28-6. The North trimmed the lead to 28-12 just before halftime, but any hopes of a comeback were dampened on the first play of the second half.

That’s when Gulliver LB C.J. Calero pressured Central QB Tijuan Morten on an attempted screen pass and tipped the ball in the air. Columbus defensive lineman Tony Mills picked off the loose ball in the air and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown and a 35-12 lead.

“When I saw the ball in the air, I fumbled it a little bit but managed to secure it and it was off to the races,” Mills said. “Never scored a touchdown in my life, what a feeling.”

The North scored twice in the final five minutes, including a second score with 40 seconds left that made the score look closer than the game was.
