American Heritage cruises past Cardinal Gibbons at Kreul Showcase

With the high school basketball season still in its infancy, playing in events such as the Kreul Showcase gives coaches a chance iron out the kinks.

Despite a 97-68 blowout of Cardinal Gibbons at Monarch High on Saturday, American Heritage coach Brent Maffett said this showcase is a perfect fit to build on.

“The main thing is we want to play good competition to see where we are at,” Maffett said. “It’s a good thing to play in showcases like this.”

Paced by senior guard Nick Backer’s 18 points and 17 points from sophomore forward Damari Monsant, Heritage cruised.

Gibbons was led by Khris Bogle with 17 points and Michael Valenzi with 16 points.

▪ Even though his team loss 64-61 loss to Northeast, Miami Christian coach Juan Cardona said games such as the Showcase are needed for his young squad.

“We need as many games like this as we can,” Cardona said. “This is a new group that has nothing from the success we had last year.”

Brandon Swaby and Ricardo Jackson each had 18 points for Northeast, and Neftali Alvarez had 22 points for the Victors.

Coral Springs, which played Miami Norland in the late game Saturday night, likes to use early season games such as this as a barometer for the remainder of the season.

“To me this is all about playoff preparation,” Coral Springs coach Devin Barta said. “This allows to play in a playoff type environment against a multiple state champion in Miami Norland.

“Events like this will for us becoming playoff ready.”

The Kreul Classic, held at the Coral Springs Gymnasium, will be held Dec.15-18.
