Doral, Western continue historic seasons with comeback wins; Champagnat advances

From Miami Herald staff reports

Christian Ramirez kicked a 20-yard field goal with 32 seconds remaining in the game to give Doral Academy a dramatic 6-5 victory over host Dwyer in a 7A regional semifinal.

"Oh my gosh. This is my first year kicking, I never thought it would come down to the last kick like that," said Ramirez. "I just kept thinking in my head that I gotta do it for my team."

Trailing 5-3 with 3:47 to play, the Firebirds (10-2) offense took over at the Doral 15 after their defense stopped Dwyer (9-3) on fourth-and-two from at the Doral 15.

Firebirds senior quarterback Miles Hayes connected on a pair of huge completions, 30 and 43-yard passes to Baron Grant on the game-winning drive to setup the winning kick and a regional final birth against St. Thomas Aquinas.

Region 3-8A semifinal - Western 14, Palm Beach Central 12: Nothing went right for Western the first three quarters of the game.

Trailing Palm Beach Central by 12 points entering the final frame, it looked like the Wildcats’ playoff run would be a short one after the team won its first-ever playoff game last week.

But in the fourth quarter, Western was a completely different team. Running back Keshaun Clarke scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns – including the game winner from one yard out with 58 seconds left to help the Wildcats stun the Broncos.

Led by senior quarterback Harrison Story, Western converted two fourth downs on the final drive of the game to cap off the wild comeback. Palm Beach Central had the ball inside the 40-yard line with 10 seconds remaining, but the Wildcats sacked quarterback Nick Atkins as the clock expired – setting off a jubilant Wildcat celebration.
