Chaminade golfer 2 shots off state lead

There were no opening jitters for the top players at the state finals, at least not on the girls’ side.

Nine girls finished Round 1 under par at the Class 1A state finals on Tuesday at Mission Inn & Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, including Chaminade-Madonna senior Valeria Pacheco-Claudio, who carded a 3-under-par 69 and Ransom Everglades sophomore Phoebe Beber-Frankel, who finished at 2-under 70.

Pacheco-Claudio is two shots off the lead and Beber-Frankel one, both trailing Oxbridge Academy sophomore Maisie Filler and Orlando First Academy sophomore Ariel Yu, who finished with 68s on the 5,624-yard Las Colinas Course. Yu finish tied for third last year.

“I honestly had very few expectations coming into this tournament,” said Beber-Frankel, who finished tied for fifth last year. “I birdied the first hole [No. 10] and that kind of set the tone for the day.”

Beber-Frankel is making her fourth trip to state, starting as a sixth-grader. She missed her eighth-grade year and it is her second consecutive outing at Mission Inn. She made four birdies in Round 1.

“I did not want to do worse than last year, so I tied myself from the first day of last year. I shot 70 the first day last year and 74 the second day, so hopefully, I can beat that,” Beber-Frankel said.

Circle Christian senior Daniel Core leads the boys’ tournament at 5-under 67 on the 100-year-old El Campeon Course, which covers 6,601 yards. Four boys shot under par for the day.

Palmer Trinity sophomore Cameron Piedra finished at 74, after a triple-bogey on No. 17. Outside of the one mishap hole, he shot 1-under for the rest of Round 1 and is 10th.

Circle Christian’s boys also lead the team standings, finishing at 296. Sagemont boys, led by senior Tyler Pham with a 76 and senior Kolby Nguyen with 77, are in ninth with a 323.

Ramson Everglades boys, led by Beber-Frankel’s twin brother Jake with a 73, are in the 14th spot at 333. He finished in a four-way tie for 10th last year with 78-75 — 153.

For the girls, First Academy is out front in the team standings after finishing Round 1 with a 283. First Academy had three players shoot under par.

Ramson Everglades’ girls were seventh with a 335, also led by sophomore Rachel DeAngulo, who carded a 76, and Megan Houchin with an 88. The Carrolton girls were 11th after finishing with a 371. Tany Eathakotti led the way with a 73. Also, for Chaminade-Madonna, which did not qualify as a team, freshman Isabela Bailly carded a 78.
