Southwest beats Palmetto in Smoothie King volleyball consolation match
Southwest was able to rally in the third set to defeat Palmetto 24-26, 25-19, 17-15 and win the gold division consolation match of the eighth annual Smoothie King Invitational on Saturday night at Ransom Everglades.
Palmetto (14-5) defeated the Eagles (17-3) in the first set, but Southwest rallied to take the second set and won a close third set on a hitting error by the Panthers.
Mourning (13-4) advanced to the silver final but was defeated by Apopka 25-22, 14-25, 15-11.
The gold final was between two Orlando area schools and was won by 19-0 Dr. Phillips over Timber Creek 22-25, 25-20, 15-8.
Killian won the cooper final 25-16, 25-21 over Coral Reef. Host Ransom was defeated 25-18, 25-22 by Bishop Moore (Orlando) in the bronze final.
Kevin Rocklein of Dr. Phillips was named tournament MVP.

BASKETBALL
Atlanta Falcons assistant coach Marquand Manuel and former Alabama and Virginia Commonwealth men's basktball coach Anthony Grant head the 2015 class that will be inducted into the Miami High Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday night at Miami High.
Manuel starred for the Stingarees football team in the mid-1990s before a successful playing career at Florida and the NFL. Before becoming a college coach, Grant was an All-State and All-County basketball player for Stingaree teams in the early 1980s.
Joining Manuel and Grant in this year’s Hall of Fame class are basketball players Allen Edwards, Tony Rogers and Zane Hernandez, and baseball player Rick Fuentes.
The induction ceremony at the Miami High auditorium will be preceded by a dinner. Tickets for the event, which starts at 5 p.m., are $35 per person or $300 for a table of 10.
