Cypress Bay wins girls regional swim title

Kathleen Golding is at it again.

The junior from Cooper City High continues to have an impressive 2017 swimming season.

Not only did Golding help the Cowboys win a pair of relay races, she was a winner in the 200 individual medley (2:02.51) and 100 freestyle (50.90) at the Region 4-4A swim meet at Boca Raton High on Thursday.

The Cooper City girls finished second with 271 points, while Cypress Bay was the team winner with 455 points. Coral Reef was third with 218 points. The Lightning also won the boys’ title with 347 points. Cooper City was second with 224 points, while Columbus was third with 186 points.

The top two finishers in the individual events automatically qualified for the state meet in Stuart on Nov. 10.

Both of Golding’s times in the individual events bested those when she broke the meet records at BCAA Championships in early October.

“It’s been a lot of hard work,” Golding said of her improvement since her freshman year. “I’ve been training really hard at practice and have great teammates that push me every day.

“I have a lot more confidence in myself since I was a freshman.”

Despite her growth as a swimmer, Golding added there’s hopefully more to come.

Golding was the third leg (butterfly) of the 200 Medley relay (1:49.70) and the last leg of the 200 freestyle relay (1:40.00).

Heath Brames of Cooper City was the only doubles winner among the boys, winning the 200 freestyle (1:43.09) and finished second in the 100 freestyle (47.48).

Brandon Vives of Columbus qualified for state in the 2,000 individual medley (1:57.47).
