American Heritage girls lead at 2A state golf

The American Heritage girls’ golf team displayed the whole package on Tuesday.

Not only did American Heritage walk out of Round 1 of the Class 2A state finals with the best team score and best individual score, but one of their players, freshman Casey Weidenfeld, scored high on the honesty meter.

American Heritage, last season’s 2A state runner-up, carded a collective 304 on the par-72 Las Colinas Course at Mission Inn & Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, to lead second-place and defending state champions Archbishop McCarthy by 12 strokes.

“We’ve had leads before and we’ve been down before in years past. But I think the thing today was to go out and play conservative, play against the course and hope to be in the top three so you have chance on the second day,” American Heritage girls’ coach Linda Sibio said.

Heading into just the second hole after starting on 10, Weidenfeld noticed an extra putter in her bag. Players are only allowed 14 clubs and Weidenfeld immediately let her coach know and took the four-stroke penalty, but she still finished with a remarkable round of 76.

“So she actually shot even, and we shot 300. But that is something we teach, honesty and integrity. She looked in and just realized it. She could have easily not said anything. But that is not golf,” Sibio said.

American Heritage sophomore Jillian Bourdage carded a 2-under 70 to lead all players. She finished ninth in the state last season. Also for American Heritage, Kelly Shanahan and Lily Celentano finished with 79s.

The Archbishop McCarthy girls finished the first round with a 316. Sophomore Natalia Jimenez — the only remaining starter from 2016 title team — led the squad, carding a 5-over 77. Senior Casey Sommers and sophomore Taylor Roberts finished with 79s and Jennifer Lilly ended the day with an 81.

Roberts finished tied for third place in Class 3A last season, playing for Stoneman Douglas, when she carded a two-day 146, after a nifty opening round of 2-under 70 on the same course.

The American Heritage boys, the defending 2A state champions, finished Round 1 on the par-72 El Campeon Course, in second place with a 306. Ponte Vedra (301) was first and Orlando Bishop Moore (308) was holding down third position.

American Heritage was led by Jonathan Mourin 78, Leo Herrera 82, Jude Kim 75, Alberto Martinez 74 and Adamo DiTullio 79. Kim, Herrera and Martinez were all on last year’s title team.

Archbishop McCarthy finished Round 1 in 12th place with a 357. They were led by Justin Lilly (79) and Case Hinesley (90), Clinton Cooper (93), Eric Wagner (95) and Ian Rodriguez (98).

Ponte Vedra’s Stewart Slayden leads all players after finishing with a 3-under 69.
